Well 532nm is the brightest common wavelength you can get, and also the one that is easiest to obtain in higher powers. Sure the 445nm lasers are available, but they're more expensive and not as mass produced as 532nm lasers. The red lasers are also not that bright to the eyes and wouldn't affect night vision as much as green.

445nm is easiest to obtain in higher powers :beer:

For the price of a 2W 445nm, you can only get about 500mW of 532nm.

Sickens me. I don't like how angry I am over this stuff but in these instances I am. The culprits deserve punishment and I for one think that anyone coming to this forum that hints at this kind of behavior should get the strongest reprimanding and then banned.

Yes we all like to have fun but we just cannot allow any hint of this here. Lasing an aircraft is NOT fun. It is a federal offense and for good reason.
Sorry if this sounds harsh. I am a nice guy but I have no tolerance for this kind of thing. It all ruins everything for our responsible members and no matter what, we need to make it absolutely clear that our community does not tolerate this kind of behavior.
Personally I would like to see some safety message saying this and how the members here don't tolerate this and safety comes first right in big bold letters on the opening screen. I really believe it is necessary at this point. There's just too many issues being reported and I think it's only going to get worse so our position should be pro-actively stated.

Lasers being linked to terrorism is BAD. I agree with Pman that a proactive stance on laser safety should be encouraged on the Forum. Veteran members have always pushed safety, but the negative press towards the hobby is escalating.

I think Bionic Badger hit it on the head. 532nm is the most visible wavelength to the human eye and probably why all the publicity.

The problem is that idiots can't be controlled and have a tendency to ruin things for everyone else :scowl:

As you can see by my signature:

I have never used my green lasers at all to annoy others, if ever someone wants to see my 500mW laser burn(Don't have goggles yet, yes saving up for some right now) I tell them, you can see it burn but DO NOT look at the object/dot until it's burnt.

The only time I aim my 532nm's in the sky is to see the beam, I only do it one time, when I receive the laser and I MAKE SURE there are no planes at all, if anything I try and aim it straight up(Just in case).

I have never endangered anyone and plan to keep it that way.

If the individual on the ground can't see, they can't aim their laser properly :wave:

I know damage is done, and is an after-the-fact sort of retaliation, but perhaps if someone gets almost blinded by a plane because they were trying to hit it with a laser, maybe they'll stop shining lasers at planes.

All those idiots thinking they are cool with their over-prices "Artic/Krypton"? It's people like them we need to get rid of their lasers.

It sounds heavy but I tend to agree. With the gravity of the situation being reported out there, perhaps some of these options are now really worth considering to further our cause and help us set this place aside from sounding like any other commercial entity. Cos if we don't self-regulate, I'm concerned that 'the powers that be' may one day even contemplate untoward measures impacting the continuity of this forum and drive it underground.

I agree that we as a community could be more proactive. However, that would first involve developing a consensus. To say that we're against shooting down airplanes with deadly weapons goes without saying.

What I'd like to see is laws that make finer distinctions. Consider for example laws against theft. There must be dozens of different laws on that, taking into account the amount stolen, how it was stolen, etc. Lasers and airplanes should be the same way. A kid shooting a 50mW laser at the side of a plane 10 miles away is not the same as someone parked half a mile from the airport, shining a 2-watt laser at the cockpit of a plane as it's coming in for a landing. The first is a misguided prank, the second an act of terrorism and attempted mass murder.

A good law would distinguish between power levels, distance, proximity to an airport, whether the cockpit was hit, and if it was a critical time in the airplane's flight such as take-off, and especially landing.

The kid with the 50mW laser could go to laser safety school (like traffic school) while the terrorist would get whatever terrorists have coming.

:crackup: I don't think "Laser Safety School" would work real well.

1) The goverment isn't going to waste money on it
2) There are thousands of kids with high powered lasers
3) Why? People should be smart enough to own a laser and know not to be a complete idiot.

Well. the news is all over this right now and they are looking for anything to keep the story alive. The news is all about sensationalism. They want peoples emotions to come unglued and unfortunately something bad will happen and you can fully expect harsh measures to be taken when it goes down.
The big "tell" on all this is how long the media can sustain the stories. Not looking good at the moment for responsible users.
Again, I would like the biggest "ad" seen when coming to the site about condoning such behavior and how our members do not tolerate even joking about anything that puts people in danger.
Not really interested in having this site reported on by the media as it's doubtful they would find the "good" here. It's not like this site doesn't come up when you do a search on lasers.
I am absolutely not saying we are the fun police (far from it). This kind of thing must be head off at the pass.

At the rate it's going, the disaster we're all afraid of may now look like a matter of 'when' and not 'if'. So while both sides want to nip it in the bud, the one who can initiate action would help all to avoid the harsher measures!
