I think when they use the media to say how bad the improper use of lasers e.g this situation , they just feed the fire, the idiot on the other end of the pointer will get his thrills and try again, I understand they want the public to help track down the offender,

they would be better off getting them "Laser event finders" that some of the police/military helicopters have on them or even make some sort of stationary event finder that they have at the airport which would measure beam distance at 3 different points, beam angle at 3 different points and wavelength then let there brainy computer give some estimate GPS co-ordinates, would be cheaper to equip all the Airports with a state of the art machine than all aircrafts with other machines, in saying this they shouldn't have to do anything because idiots shouldn't be pointn that way, worse too is that they point when the aircrafts are coming in for landing... like WTF...I always recommend wearing safety goggles but for once I think I recommend the idiots who point at aircrafts to wear no goggles and point it in you own eyes.. sori if I offend some but grrrrrrrr, in march my country NZ is getting a law change due to idiots like this,

Yea true that, I didn't Realy mean that, as I never really wish any damage to any beings at all due to incorrect safety/laser use etc, Karma would punish these people if the law does not find them anyway, think my fingers just auto typed what I said,

This is beginning to get out of control with the $10,000 reward snitch line.
I would be very hesitant using a handheld outdoors at this point.
At least until the end of this FBI "test".
There are plenty of people out there who will call the police at the first sign of a laser beam.
Whether it's because they're genuinely concerned about someone targeting an aircraft or they think they can make a quick 10K.

I don't remember the last time I actually took a laser outside. Too much potential trouble. All my units are in cases, there are only adults here and I'm the only one who ever touches them (and that's all indoors).
Not looking for trouble and no interest in others even knowing I have them. Not interested in "showing off". They are for my personal enjoyment.

That's fine, but just from personal experience take one with you if you ever go on a cruise. The beam when it is pitch black late at night is probably one of the most amazing things you will ever see come from your lasers.

hanging around airports at night could become very profitable- at DFW they have hundreds of laser incidents every year (iirc more than any other city) this thread needs to stay alive TY Mac for bumping- i forgot how pissed-off that story made me..

I do night shots in my country backyard but keep them to short times no more than 45 min- then shut done for at least an hour- Only once did I see a county cop car roll by and I don't think anyone called them- I have seen them out this way before.. making the 'rounds' waiting til the donut shops open.. no new laws are needed we have 'reckless endangerment' and that should cover it- then charge could be 'enhanced' if injury resulted or upgrade the charge to temp. murder. -

I know a member here that causally said something at the work lunch area iirc about fertilizer at stores that can be used for bombs and HLS Feds came quick to his home and they had to allow a search. those guys have zero sense of humor. somebody at work set him up. IMO but something to remember if your neighbors dont like you, your parties or music- they can call in your lasers instead.

Anytime we ever dare lase outdoors from now on, rem it may give somebody else (including pilots & attorneys) a chance to earn ten grand at our expense! Don't be caught in a compromising position! Latest laser warning decal :

Well how about this fact- one of the major reasons the rise in aircraft laser sightings rose so fast is left out of the POS report-- the 'rules' were changed. At one time pilots were not encouraged / required to report any sightings of any lasers-- then the rule changed- ALL PILOTS were required to report EVERY time a laser was aimed at them, but not just seeing any lasers on the ground as they were/are after all on no importance to aircraft but this did make for alarming numbers of reports. THEN the BIG change ( not told in this so-called 'news') Pilots were told that is was manditory to report all sightings no exceptions- so naturally the number of reports rose dramatically. So the stats have been manipulated by this change.
Meantime it may be a great idea to no longer use laser outdoors at night as any pilot who sees them is required to report the sighting. So make your choice- lasers illegal or we stop doing things that cause more reports.
Either way its not looking good for us...

The government goons need to stop calling these incidents "attacks". They need to be honest with us and differentiate intent to cause harm from reckless ignorance.

I don't think any of these laser incidents are "attacks" at all, I think they're thoughtless, careless, ignorant actions that could be corrected and prevented through open and honest education and information. The general public knows almost nothing about lasers, so no wonder it's always some random Joe Blow waving a pointer around. Nobody here would do it, why? Because we KNOW what the things can do, and we don't want to do it to someone! We wouldn't want it to happen to us! We know it's serious business. Your average Joe Q. Blow Public doesn't. To them, it's just a light-up toy. No big deal, it's just a light. So they wave it around thinking it's just harmless fun, or a game, or a joke of some sort. Then they make the news, and when that happens EVERYONE loses.

The government could educate the people about this stuff but it will never happen, there is more money to be made in prison, and punishment, and banning. Enjoy your lasers while you can, I give it two years tops before all we're allowed is 1mW. Or more likely, in the United States, no lasers at all, period, end of story. 10 years in the slammer if you disagree. Welcome to the land of the free.

eta: Also, lasers are regulated by the FDA; *everyone* knows the FDA is FULL OF SHIT. They allow drugs on the market that KILL people. Celebrex, anyone? Just saw a commercial for it today, wasn't that crap killing people via heart attacks a couple of years back? Well, now it's back on the market apparently, ready to keep right on killing.

Nobody respects the FDA, because the FDA only hires retards and blowhards, and ALL of them are paid off by Big Pharma. Maybe if our federal agencies actually lived up to the standards they profess, and if they were honest with us about things, people would take them seriously. Are there any statistics available that show how much aircraft/laser incidents have increased recently in the US?

I was reading a Customs yearly report recently that stated that here in Australia there has been no notable change in laser incidents after restricting output power to 1mW. While this is a strange statistic, at least it hasn't increased... Clearly prohibition isn't the answer here.

Historically prohibition has never been the answer.

Alcohol, drugs, firearms, you name it, prohibition hasn't worked for it. Unfortunately it's much easier for a government to exert control, or the appearance of it, through prohibition, versus say education.

Would be nice of the government to note that it's not working every once in a while.
