Extracting Diodes From Nichia diode bank

I also wonder what projectors these diode banks go to. They must be pretty nice and expensive. I would assume that they have a bank for red, green and blue possibly oNE other color.
 





You know most use 1 big red LED and a bank of the blues that shine through a spinning phosphor wheel with one clear gap for blue to go through.

That's another reason I want to repurpose an entire media unit.

EDIT: Ok I see them, cool, what temp did they melt at and did they survive it?

Oh that's cool. Now I see what you meant. It would be nice to have a phosphor wheel to see what's possible. For sure.

That pic is a DTR NUBM44 I just got. I was just showing that it definitely was heat extracted. The more time I think about it the more I think that a temp controlled hot plate and tapping them from the back is how to do it. That's what my dad told me to do. And he's an electrical engineer. He doesn't have much experience with lasers but he assures me the diode can withstand higher heat than the solder.
 
Solders are available with many different melting points.

Here is how I would do it if the '06 has a built in lens....

First I would cut two diodes of the block with a band saw. Next I would cut into the block on each side of the diode till I hit, or very near hit, the diode rim. After cutting I would put the diode in the toaster oven at around 85 deg C. After say 5-10 min take the block out and try to pry the block apart at the cuts. It should be obvious at this point if the solder has softened. If not go up say 10 deg C, repeat.

I wouldn't try anything without the relief cuts due to the fact the diode are pressed in as well as soldered.
 
I'm going to take the one diode that I killed which still has solder on the bottom and put it in my oven that has a digital thermastat. I will raise it incrementally and find the exact point that the solder melts at. If it isn't too high of a temp I will proceed with one diode I cut off the block. If it lives and there is no damage then we have found the trick. I will post my results.
 
Sad there has to be diodes ruined to figure this out when the knowledge is right here right now:(
 
True. But it's understandable from a business point of view. Trade secrets are valuable. We can figure it out for ourselves.

I think I like this the most, just stick a big regular screw driver in the relief cuts and turn, if there's absolutely no give, raise the temperature!

I wish I had the money to buy a bank and do this! lol. We want pictures! :D
 
Yeah I want to show pics. How do you upload pics on here? Do you have to use a computer?
 
It is a lot easier, I have never uploaded pictures on my phone, I hope someone can tell you how please!
 
When I get a minute I'll use my laptop to upload. This must be an old type of forum program.
 
I can't stand the mobile version, I always switch to the desktop version when I'm at work on my phone. ;)
 
The way I do it is using a free photobucket.com account, you can upload from a cell phone or a PC to that site and once uploaded, they give you a link to use here, just click the little picture of the mountain with a yellowish background and it will cause a pop up to appear to put the link from photobucket into.
 
I don't like the mobile version of any site. Don't see any way to make my note 4 tell all sites to default come up as full or desktop though:(
I use imageshack.com for pics but have no idea how to do videos.

I wonder if you can use the "sand bath" method used to depopulate circuit boards? Just use a fine play sand in a hot plate, and rest the back side of the diode bank into the sand.
