Damage to the intestinal lining causes bacterial leakage (sepsis) and dehydration, bone marrow damage causes loss of white blood cells and immune system destruction. The loss of immune system coupled with the sepsis is the main cause of death from radiation poisoning.

Yup, isn't that called the "walking ghost" phase of radiation poisoning? When someone has gotten a lethal dose; the initial burn/vomiting/fever etc effects have worn off and the victim feels fine for a while (even like they have completely recovered) -- but their intestinal lining and blood cells are already too damanged to recover?

There is enough crap in the air and daily ingestion to keep
my immune system busy for a long time without damaging
it to to the point of possibly killing me....:whistle:

Your setup is pulsed at 60Hz though, isn't it? One cycle of the mains frequency passes through the tube. Or by "pulsed" is it meant that high voltage capacitors are used?

My setup is pulsed at the mains frequency. So technically it is pulsed. I figure sigurthr ment pulsed by a set of caps.

Best invest in some high capacitance doorknob filter caps when you get yourself a geiger because geiger tubes cannot register simultaneous events. If two or more xray photons trigger the tube simultaneously the tube reacts as if a single photon struck it, thus pulsed emission cannot be measured accurately. Filter out as much of the pulsation as you can, usually as long as the lowest ripple voltage is above 22kV you will get a quasi-CW emission. *There is more to it than that as to why pulsed emission cannot be measured by a geiger tube, but that's the main factor.*

Thanks for sharing the experiment Jeffrey, how much do plates like that cost?

It wasn't long ago I was looking at some circuits that used a FET for detecting
xrays?/gamma?/ or whatever. (I know nothing of the stuff)

When I heard you had it going for 20 seconds I thought about how quick xray
shots are taken at the dentist/hospital, yet I'm sure you know what you are
doing!

Pretty much. The alternative is to spend >$1200 on a quick-responce ion chamber calibrated for low energy xrays.

If you're going to be playing with fire, you should take precautions. Having an X-ray generator and no means of accurately measuring dose/exposure rates is far worse than having a 2W 532nm labby and no goggles. You're not just endangering yourself but everyone within a couple hundred feet of you. There is no way to tell if your shielding is effective if you can't accurately measure the radiation level.

Indeed limiting exposure was important, which is why we only took two pictures until the setup could be improved. The setup had lead shielding around the tube not shining on the intensifier sheet and that side was pointed to the wall of the house facing the front yard so there would be no risk for anyone else.

Exposure for normal dental x-rays is very short, but I've already had a whole mouth x-ray where the x-ray head pans around your head and the exposure takes about 30 seconds to complete as it takes a panorama of all your teeth.

We were also running the tube just above threshold for the lowest energy x-rays and it was not producing x-rays for the entire picture exposure. I just set my camera to 20 seconds so we would have adequate time to step back and control the HV supply variac.

Remember that xrays -can- reflect and scatter off high Z (density) materials, including lead shields. It has more to do with the angle of incidence than anything else, iirc.

Yeah, it's important for people to know this isn't something that should be messed with without significant consideration for the safety hazards involved.

That happens when you manage to stand inside the core of a nuclear reactor, under a nuclear bomb test, or something extremely hazardous like that. No x-ray tube will kick out radiation that could cause such sickness from brief exposure.

Considering this equipment came from medical units, i sincerly doubt it would pose a serious health risk when taking snapshops of your hand. The idea that your hands would not be sensitive at all inst correct though: the bones in your hands do contain sme bone marrow, and upon radiation damage that could lead to leukeamia and such. The chances are obviously very slim, but don't consider a hand or foot something that can be irradiated as much as you like without consequence!
 
I forget the actual insane dose necessary for it, but 100R (1Gy) and up sounds about right. There have been peacetime incidents where exposures of >5000R have happened those poor men died in hours.

Be careful dealing with salvaged medical equipment. I remember there was a south american case where a scrapyard worker got hold of a 500Ci (!) Cs137 collimated x-ray source. Most of his coworkers and family received fatal doses. They took it home and showed it off because of the cherenkov radiation (glowing blue light) it gave off.

I think this might be the incident you are talking about. A co-worker and I were recently talking about it, so we were looking up info about it.

The dismantling and transport of the material led to severe contamination of his truck; when the truck was scrapped, it in turn contaminated another 5,000 metric tonnes of steel with an estimated 300 Ci (11 TBq) of activity. This material was sold for kitchen or restaurant table legs and building materials, some of which was sent to the U.S. and Canada; the incident was discovered when a truck delivering contaminated building materials months later to the Los Alamos National Laboratory accidentally drove through a radiation monitoring station. Contamination was later measured on the roads that were used to transport the original damaged radiation source. In some cases pellets were actually found embedded in the roadway. In the state of Sinaloa, 109 houses were condemned due to contaminated building material. This incident prompted the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Customs Service to install radiation detection equipment at all major border crossings.[21]

As a simple precaution, I'd recommend that you wrap the family jewels in multi layers of lead foil and rubber bands to prevent future problems.
Also an aluminum cap for the head might help too !!!
I have thought of trying this a few times myself but figured that retreat is the better part of valor.
