Diode Problems

I just recieved 3 IR diodes in the mail, they are all 5.6mm. I need some tips on inserting them into the aixiz module, i broke the tip of my nail trying to do it, i put petroleum jelly on it, still no good. Any tips?
 





First of all you should not put petroleum jelly on it! That is an insulator and it will not let heat pass from the diode to the module. To put your diode in an Aixiz module just set the diode into where it is supposed to go, put the back end of the module over the back of the diode so the diode legs go through the hole, and press it together with a vice. Rog posted a picture of how to do it, but I can't remember where it is posted.
 
Here it is... I have found recently that the housings are a bit tight and having damaged one Aixiz backend I now use a tube with a thicker wall

I do the same "back of the aixiz housing" trick, but I have no vice handy typically (I'm a kitchen table kind of guy, myself), so I position the pieces and press them together slowly, carefully, and incrementally using pieces of wood or something of that sort that is hard and flat. 2 large, flat surfaces that are easy to hold level, basically. But if you do this, go slowly and carefully. The vice is best, but this is how I have successfully done it otherwise.
 
Ok, but the AixiZ module screws right on to the front end, there is nothing to push the diode with.
 
That's why you use the back where the wires come out, take a closer look at the pic rog posted.
 
Oh... now i feel stupid. Um, i dont have a vice, but i tried pressing it in with the back of the module, guess what? No luck. Any other ideas? I was thinking about drilling a bigger diameter in the AixiZ housing, would that work?
 
As I said above these days the LD's do fit very tightly into the reccess, this means you have to put a lot of force on the flange to get it seated. Do you have a G--clamp? You could try inserting by winding in with that BUT you need to be very careful that you keep everything square as you do it.
I have heard people say that they have relieved the reccess using a dremal with a grinding bit mounted, another BUT....you need to be careful not to overdo it as a loose LD is an overheating LD.

If your lucky you may only need 1 and the other side won't pop up while you push one side down.
 
i would get a vice. they sell them at my local market for about £5 to 10. if you use other things you risk having an offset diode which will reduce power and the beam will not leave straight
 
I bought a little tiny vice for 5 dollars brand new from the shop. Get one. Its useful
 
The hole can also be beveled and releaved a little with a hobby knife. Yes steel will cut brass (and your finger). Use heatsink grease (Arctic5) as a lubricant. Also protect the threads with a piece of wood.

I use a vise and a small part I bought from Lowe's (home improvement store). The part is a "brass insert and delrin sleeve... 1/4" OD w/insert".

It's a little brass part tube with a flared end. The inner diameter is JUST smaller than the "tip"of the diode (the "can"), and if you grind it out a little (I use a dremel with a small diameter grinding stone), it working perfectly for extracting diodes from the Aixiz module. But, you don't have to grind it to use for inserting diodes, just stick the non-flared end over the leads with the diode sitting in the Aixiz module and press them together in the vise. To extract, just stick the the brass piece over the "can"of the diode in the module, with the module back screwed on, and press the brass piece and module and the diode pops right out.
