Diode Graveyard






yea I'm working swingshift should get home by 12:45 am make yours and Techjunkies
units then ship in the morning -but as to the dead diode thing yeppers been there doing that

(1) phrs-1 left in car in pen unit died
(3)phr - first three flexdrives i used killed three phr's ??? freaking flipping flopping
(1) phr bad connection on diode pins
(2)phr overheated during extraction from heatsink died instant
(2) used wrong driver a 420 ma my fault for getting in a hurry
(1) 6x i'd rather not talk about this one right now

note I have only built one red its a 16x stonetech at 300 ma puts out 185 mw have about 4-6?? hours on it works great over a year now

Two lcc at 400ma. Less then 2 weeks of use :(
One phr at 115ma. Less then 5 weeks of use :(
 
My first PHR @ 110mA, built by Darkarmy in a Pocket Pal host.

A mysterious death after less then 1 hr of regular use :(
 
One red/IR combo LD from a PHR sled: LED after 30 sec @ 65mA (no heatsinking, it wasn't even in an Aixiz) :eg:
 
Well over 12 LPC and PHR (total) diodes...

How? Ranges from pins breaking (50% of the diodes I broke broke like that), possible overheating, possible too much current, reconnecting w/o shorting out capacitor (LM317 - "DDL" driver), etc.

Edit: Actually I think it's around 15+ LPC and PHR.... plus I broke a few KES sleds (don't hear much about them these days...)
 
2xPHR, completely dead, first one from accidental short on breadboard @120ma, second for no reason at 110ma, using DDL driver.
Used the first phr for maybe 10 min and the second for ~5 before death

2xLPC ledified. The first was @400ma DDL driver, damaged from accidental short on breadboard, ~10 min use, the second died at 380ma (rkcstr V3). Assume some kind of short again for the second because I tested it before I screwed the MXDL assembly together and it worked but once I assembled it and turned it on it didnt work. Took it apart and shortened/rearranged the wires, it then worked but it turned into an led after about 5 min use.

Each diode was in a jayrob heatsink and didn't exceed 1-1.5 mins continuous run time with any. I was also careful to be very quick when soldering leads to the diodes (~1-2 s) and used an anti-static wrist strap
Always remembered to discharge the capacitor on the DDL driver before connecting diodes too...
All in the last 3 weeks :yabbem:
 
150mW violet laser. Was it 803-something the name was?

Anyway:
The driver was a 2 cell LiPo battery (8.4V fully charged)

No filter, only a resistor in series to reduce the voltage and current.

On/off switch.

The laser has worked well - for quite many hours. Replaced lenses 100 times without damaging anything.

So one day it died due to some electric shock from the TV screen. if it was filtered, this might never had happend. So next time I ill add a small capacitor to take care of hight voltage peaks.


Once i killed a 650nm diode for a 16x DVD burner. I used a CR123 rechargeable battery cell. These are at 4.2V at max charge, but they do not deliver much current. So an instant voltage drop occoured when I directly connected the laser to this battery. This was the laser I discovered the optical trap. It was powerful. I lit quite a few fuses for fireworks - just through the transparent plastic wrapping.

One day it died - probably due to too much power input.

Well, that is my stories.
 
I got 2 PHR.. came from Glenn

the first one, just died after 10 days of use

it is set on 110mw using a BOBLASER pen driver

and put in the host of the boblaser pen


before it died, it just emitted a weak purple beam with a white-yellowish rectangle thing.. then after letting it rest.. its not emitting anymore..

the second one instantly died after extracting...

now im waiting for the 2 more PHR i ordered from glenn...

I've so many diodes I don't know if I'll be able to put all of them here...:yabbem:

Senkat diode old batch 3-4 dead (no driver, just a resistor).
Senkat diode 2 killed with a false reading on Multimeter (internal resistance).
2 phr's: one during extraction and one killed a while after a capacitor burst.
1 senkat diode: As far I can tell it died of natural causes at 250mA's.
3 LOC's I'm not sure what/if I did wrong.
1 LOC and 1 LCC adjusting flexdrive with diode attached (stupid).

Can't remember any others right now so I'll post more later.

Here are the dead diodes I decided to save instead of hurling at the trash out of frustration:gun: Most of them died after at least 6 months use, but unfortunatly some were short lived. The large diode i the ten pin diode is an old 1993 model LDP inc. 22025, package type is TO-8 with a lasing threashold of 2 amps and a maximum input of 20 amps(pulsed), power output is 6 watts cw and 12 watts pulsed, wave length is 904nm. I ran it at 6 amps in for about 3 months. I'm pretty sure it still lases, the bonding wires were just severed when it slipped from my vice, there were three, if any one has any idea how to fix it that would be awsome.

1x PHR, first blu-ray, whatever rkcstr is set stock, probably way to high, tried to put it in host and as I stuffed in the wires and having no barrel on the axis module it shifted the driver and one of the diode pins disconnected while it was on, good bye blu-ray, loved every 60 seconds of you. Got a replacement right away though, quite happy with it.

Here's and obvious tip, if you have little left over bits of solder, don't use them, for god sake buy a new roll, it will keep more money in your pocket.

This is getting to be a decent little memorial! I always enjoy reading about the various ways these little things can perish.. :evil::evil:

Thanks for all the memorials so far. The diodes are honored by our remembrance of them.:angel:
