Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two
BH:
I love your design!
One note though, it would machine quite that way. The cutter is circular, and about 1.5mm. You'll loose a TON of the fine points. I think the inner circle will be too thin also (less than a mm in your design)
If you try the "price" analyze tool, it will end up highlighting in red everything that won't get machined properly. It's really useful.
Krogith:
I didn't entirely follow your request - can you explain it again?
Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two
AHH ben, thats some wicked sick designs...unfortunetly that would make these knobs cost quite a bit. and if you use the price analyzer function, it will tell you how small a tool you need to use to make the designs you chose. The tolerance for the machining would have to be like 0.05mm which will make the price skyrocket faster than apollo 13 man.
not to say i dont appreciate the hard work you are putting in. And that would be a nice one-off or custom type knob. But the replacement for the aixiz knobs wouldnt make sense if it ended up costing 10 bucks each... FP makes great knobs for a little more.
Oh btw did you run the program all the way through and get a price quote for that design, i might be interested in those if a GB could be organized for like 10 of them.
Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two
One other note - this CNC shop stops being able to machine aluminum with any bit size less than 1.5mm - so to be honest, I'm not even sure of the extent to which the detail on mine will be as good as presented.
Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two
ahh yess... rhd is absolutely correct. damn... that sucks monkey nuts... for a precision machine shop to be unable to cut smaller than 1.5mm. then again...its not easy i know.
Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two
It would loose it's flare - in fact your design would too
Just to reiterate, some of these designs are REALLY cool and creative, but are beyond what we can (feasibly) get machined. Here's a visual explanation of what wouldn't work:
You can't do fine detail. In fact, my design is likely pushing the limits.
Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two
Mostly - the three dots would end up making the side walls REALLY thin (like, less than half a mm thin) - which would likely be a problem.
Without those dots, it would be golden
You should fire up the software and give it a shot. I learned it (at least -to the extent of being able to make it work) in 2 hours, without previous CAD experience. It's really easy software.
Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two
sorry krogith but my vote goes to rhd's latest design. simple yet elegant. very nice, while keeping good structure. Wouldnt want these to bend or break easy...though your "ninja star" design is awesome. maybe a batch of each? 100 of rhd's and 100 of krogiths... im going to say i will get 15 of these when this starts rollin
