Community Focus Knob - Group Buy - 2 packs left

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

yeah $4 shipped per item is probably the maximum these should hit. I will just have to see. Its going to be a while as a shop takes time to set up. So in a month we'll get an idea of all this. also, emachineshop's lead times are kinda long, at least with something local to me I can have items shipped in 3-4 days time after payment is made.

I looked at it logically, and some of the smaller parts are less then 0.5mm. Thats like tin foil.
This is Awesome, When you talk to them see how possible this is? I bet with small bits you could get a pretty close design....

Actually, that's about 30x times thicker than standard tin foil ;)

Thanks for the correction...

Its like 30 sheets of tin foil stuck together.

Hehe - I actually had to look it up ::embarassed:

You got an incoming pm rhd.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

Stevie - was I supposed to send you the CAD file s?

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

if you can, that would be great. I've been trying to get autocad but its damn expensive. the emachineshop software only lets you save it under that software. If you can get me the actual CAD file that would make everything alot easier.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

You can go to autodesk and get a student version for 1 yr or a trail for 30 days.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

What if I export it to DXF format?

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

actually just send me the cad file, i can find the software to load it up later.

on second thought, send both versions. Im not sure what software im going to end up using so the more choices the better.

Can you PM me your email address? Sorry if you have already - I can't find it.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

Hey guys,

I'd like to add a big:

STATUS: In the XYZ stage, waiting for ABC...

notice to the very first post, and the very top of the text. I feel that group buys would benefit in general from brief synopses at the very beginning of their first post, so that latecomers could get a quick idea of where things stand.

So the question is, where do we stand on this? I sort of have semi-workable internet access at my new location (enough so that I've been able to come here for an hour or two today:)) so I'd love to check back in.

Stevie, any news?

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

from my last conversation with them, they got the location already, its now a matter of buying all the machines and setting up the shop...

that said, they sadly told me its going to be at least 2 months before business can start.

so i say if you can take care of it through emachineshop then i'd go for it. or if you want i can facilitate the GB through the emachineshop since you sent me the necessary files.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

My suggestion is that it probably makes some sense for someone in the US to coordinate the distribution if more of the potential group buy participants are in the US. I think that will substantially decrease everyone's costs.

My suggestion for us all at this stage is:

1) I'd like 2 or 3 volunteers to look at the design files for problems. I don't have much experience with CAD design, so there may be issues I've missed. I think step one needs to be community review, but at least 2 or 3 other people.

2) I think we need to then finalize the design. Post the most current specs and photos on the OP, and set a price (shipped) for each 10 pack of focus knobs.

3) At that stage, I think we open up payments (say, a week to submit?). I think a realistic target would be 200 units, divided into 20 packs of 10 for $50 total (shipped) each within US/Canada. I think that will cover all costs of the knobs themselves plus shipping out to each person, plus paypal fees.

4) Place the order, receive the output, ship to everyone.

Timeline:
1 week - stage #1, getting input on design
1 week - stage #2, get payments, while incorporating feedback from ^
3 weeks - stage #3, takes 24 days for submitted order to arrive.... waiting.....
~1 week - items divided and shipped out

So in theory, these could be at everyone's doors in 6 weeks. Sounds like a long time, but there's a bunch of opportunity for some of those stages to go faster. If people come forward to review the design ASAP, we may not need a week to collect feedback. Then we only need 20 participants, and some people may want more than 10, so payment collection might be faster. Further, 24 days is a maximum lead time, it may take less for actual delivery.

So 6 weeks, could be down around 4 weeks. It could also be longer if portions of the process aren't expedited ;)

I start a new job on Monday, so I'm not sure that I should run this. I'm a little bit conscious of not wanting to drop the ball if I suddenly realize that I don't have the time to tackle this. I'm also still semi-moving in.

Re: Community Focus Knob - Group Development / Group Buy - Take two :)

Ok that sounds like a plan...I can organize the entire thing if you want. so far as design goes I think we are good. very simple yet works as intended.
