CNI GB 5th time!

Bionic Badger:

I think CNI's website is wrong if that is the true system. There is a PGL-III-A model that uses AA's and a model that uses an 18650. The PGL III does use 2x C batteries but it only goes to 200mW. The PGL-III-C uses 18650 but goes from 250 to 500mW.

ScopeGuy20: The laser I want to see the price quote on is the PGL-III-A 200mW that uses the 18650. It should be less than $250. Thanks.

ZRTMWA:
Here are prices I found on the previous CNI GB thread:
PGL-III-A-532/1-20mW /Unit USD105.00
PGL-III-A-532/50mW /Unit USD120.00
PGL-III-A-532/80mW /Unit USD170.00
PGL-III-A-532/100mW /Unit USD200.00
PGL-III-A-532/150mW /Unit USD300.00

If you want it to run on 18650 batteries it will cost you a little bit more, as scopeguy20 said.

Personally, I would go with the AA version and save some money. A couple pairs of good AA NiMH rechargeables will last a long time. Especially in a laser with a relatively low current draw- like that one. Another advantage is that if you happen to be away from a charger, AA batteries are common in several types (lithium, NiMH, alkaline) and you can pick them up almost anywhere.

Ah, you're right. It does look like the 150mW-200mW PGL-III-A varieties use 18650s (link).

It seems that, at least for the PGL-III-A series, the battery type is dependent on the output power, not whether you want to pay a premium or not. The AA battery models are for 5-150mW, and the 18650 for 150-200mW.

AHHHHHHHH!!! My head hurts. The representative at CNI must have though I was talking about something else. This is the email I recieved. What lasers was the rep reffering too? Thanks.

Then there was a link to this data sheet:

http://www.cnilaser.com/PDF/PGL-III-A-532.pdf

Also how much would a AA 150mW pen beand does anyone have a picture of a CNI Pen laser? Thanks.

The PDF is of the PGL-III-A. That isn't the laser you were looking for? In the PDF it says the 150-200mW models use the 18650 battery.

There is no pen laser that runs on AA. Pen lasers use AAA. A CNI pen laser will look exactly like the ones at NOVAlasers and Dragonlasers.

ZRTMWA,

You're probably thinking of pen-style lasers like the Lyras on Laserglow right? Those are actually not FDA approved, so CNI will most likely not sell them here since they'd be illegal. PGL-III-As look like the Alpha series of lasers on Nova Lasers.

If you want a pen, you'd be best off buying a blank host and then putting your own high-powered module into them (here and here). The trade-off is that there is poor cooling in pens so they may die without proper mounting and such.

Yes, I have ordered some of those before, and w/ shipping and such costs they do cost a good bit more as well. But if you order on your own through CNI you will find out the actual total cost, and that's O.K. to do if you like. Best Wishes! -Glenn

RA_pierce: What was the laser you were talking about that runs on AA's Was it the PGL-III-A that goes up to 130mW? I am looking to buy a 150mW or 200mW green laser. I don't really care that much what kind of batteries it runs on, I just want to know what the cheapest 200mW green pen/portable laser is from CNI.

Bionic Badger: I really don't mind if it is not a pen style I just want it to be portable. I've never seen the pen style lasers on Laserglow. The problem with O-like is they aren't selling the 200mW modules (yet) and DX's 200mW is guaranteed around only 100mW of green. I am looking to buy a 150mW or 200mW green laser. I don't really care that much what kind of batteries it runs on, I just want to know what the cheapest 200mW green pen/portable laser is from CNI. (Yes, I did just copy the last sentences from my response to RA_Pierce). The Optotronics 150mW pen seems to have a decent duty cycle. I am leaning towards that. I was looking at a Jayrob host but it would be more expensive than buying a pre manufactured laser.

Scopeguy20: What lasers was the rep talking in the email that you said you "have ordered some of these before"? Are you saying I shouldn't buy a 150mw-200mW pen/portable laser in the group buy because it would be more expensive than purchasing on my own?

Thanks to all.
By the way do these pen/portable lasers have IR filters?

Hey ZRTMWA & friends, I think the Group Buy is the lower cost way to get a single laser, CNI will add about $45 shipping to the single laser but only about $20 ea. in a GB due to mailing together, also they try to get a bank transfer for the payment, you can check with your bank, but typically it $25 to $45 for a bank transfer, I do that at a very good low cost for a "Group". Then occasionally there is a unit that is in need of being returned, you don't likely want to go there. I can test them so I usually catch the trouble early, & get it back to CNI for replacement, (costs me a bit to send though). The PGL III lasers in "C" battery or 18650 battery style, (which I like), are FDA approved and the Optotronics "Pen" is not but that is up to the buyer to worry about. I hope this all helps folks. -Glenn

Hi, i'm sorry if it was mentioned, but couldn't find it. How much would GLP-593.5 2mW be?
And has it got an IR filter? I'm not sure if in DL they don't glue it into it.

Thank you very much.

ZRTWMA:

The laser the rep was referring to and what scopeguy20 says he has ordered before are the same as in the PDF.
That laser goes up to 200mW. The AA version goes up to 130mW and anything more runs on 18650 LiIon.

It is larger than a pen size laser, allowing for longer duty cycle, but not as large as the PGL-III or PGL-III-C lasers. At 150-200mW, I would expect the PGL-III-A (the laser the sales rep referred you to) would have a max run-time of 1.5-2 minutes (not much better than pen lasers). See Novalasers' Alpha series for dimensions and other specs (Nova only offers the AA version up to 125mW). The PDF you were given has dimensions for both the AA and 18650 version. This laser has all 5 point safety features but a momentary switch.

The larger PGL-III laser runs on C type batteries. That type goes up to 300mW and is
cheaper than the PGL-III-A.

The PGL-III-C runs on 18650s and goes from 400-500mW.

The PGL-III & PGL-III-C have larger heat-sinks and can therefore be run for longer periods at a time. They have full safety features (LED indicator, 2 second delay, key-lock, safety dongle, aperture shutter) and constant on/off switch. I would recommend you get the PGL-III 200mW or 300mW.
It would be a much better laser than the PGL-III-A as far as duty cycle, battery capacity, and stability are concerned. The only trade off is that is slightly larger.

Thank you RA_Pierce. So was the rep saying that the PGL-III-A, the 18650 that is bigger than a pen and goes up to 200mW is $250? If so how much would the C battery style be? And to scopeguy20, how much would both of these be in the GB? Thanks.

The PGL-III-A your rep was citing looks exactly like the Alpha series lasers on NovaLasers. They're not like pens in the sense that you can just press the button and the laser will instantly emit. The buttons have a 3-second delay in addition to the other safety features. I must say, however, that my PGL-III-A is the finest laser I own, and I prefer its safety features to that of a pen, all other things the same.

The C-style 200mW price is in the first post of this thread, i.e. $355. If you still want the PGL-III-A version, you'll need to ask scopeguy20 about the total GB price (money transferred, shipped), and whether he can add it -- or go it alone and incur the cost of the overhead.

Bionic-Badger: Is it overspec at all? If it is really overspec I could just order the 150mW PGL-III-A. Do you have an LPM that it has been tested on and does it have an IR Filter? Thanks.

Scopeguy20: You reading this? I would appreciate it if you could find out the total GB price (money transferred, shipped) and if you can add it to the GB at all. Thanks. By the way, any idea of when this merchedise would be ordered or arrive in the US?

Hey friends, I check the GB thread often, today I was away for a while, but I'm back. I have several folks on the current GB already, and think it will be 7 or 8 lasers total in about 5 -7 days, this is about enough to do a GB. I will also be out of town for a while, August 6 to about the 16th, but I can still both gather orders and even place the order while I'm out of town as I'll still have internet at most stopping places. All told a GB like this is not completed in just 14 days usually, but does not typically take a lot longer than 3 weeks.
Also, I believe a PGL III -A- 532 nm 150 mW is about $330 including USA shipping and PP fee. The same output in a "C" battery unit will be about $30 less. -Glenn
