Cheap and Neat - Adjustable CC/CV DC to DC Driver Module

Its an absolute bargain for what it is, I'm grabbing one.

Yeah agreed :D just bought one also :D, I can put it in a project box, add a nice 9V power supply & bam. A variable power supply for ~30$ :D much better then 150 I think :)

Just need this http://www.sparkfun.com/products/298 maybe currents a little too low, then a nice box which I have some lying around :D

Um noob question:
Can I use this to test LD current/voltage parameters? Will it increase the voltage automatically if I increase the current during the test or do I need to manually change everything?
 
It's really not that impressive. Here are some problems I see:

Output ripple will be relatively high
Display contrast is poor
output only goes down to 1.25V
No banana jacks
No housing greatly increases the likelihood of shorts
Heat sink is required for some loads
Using a screw driver every time you want to adjust the voltage or current
Beefy external power source is required. Most wall warts won't cut it.

By the time you spend enough time and money on components to fix these problems and put it in a decent case, you're above the price of an actual good bench power supply.

I strongly urge you, get a good linear power supply like this one for use with sensitive equipment like laser diodes. It is worth the extra money - it has all sorts of input protection and it will be working decades from now. This cheap board won't. If you're spending $50 regularly on diodes, you can spend $65 once for a power supply. Switching regulators (especially cheap switching regulators) are electrically noisy and risky.
 
Thanks Cyparagon for a reply. I was considering buying Mastech HY1505D supply before I saw this one. The supply you have recommended looks very appealing as well, my only concern is that it is only 3A. Wont that be not enough pretty soon :) ?

P.S. I do realize the one described here only goes up to 2A anyway...
 
The 5A version is excellent as well. But there aren't too many applications that require between 3A and 5A. 3A is plenty for most people, but more doesn't hurt.

I have the DT0811 diode and this ebay cc cv.

Does someone have a primer on cc, I change the current the voltage increases, this is a new concept for me? :)

What should volts and amps be when driving this diode?

The cc cv "turn the lamp current" and "limit switch adjustment" are confusing.

Maybe this cc cv board is no use for only 80mw as I can only go as low as 0.01 amps?

Am I wasting my time with this board, should I just get something like an Atten APS3003Si (i'm in Oz and the Mastech could be 110v)

Hi Richard,

I think the ebay converter isn't really suitable for this stuff yet because it hasn't been tested thoroughly for voltage and current spikes.

You might want to look into the stable power supplies.

If you want to try it out at your own risk, the max recommended current is 142 ish mA.
