Can opener

Yup gooeygus actually purchased one and loves it. I've sent him a few bluray 803t's to have cans removed when the windows came loose.

Those sockets look nice too. That would be an east way to test diodes w/o hooking up wires to the diode itself.

;D When I saw the title I thought it would be a laser can opener, like the cans that contain food ;D

That looks really handy, and the plugs would be useful to, could actually use them in DIYs

I think you'll find that most will recommend against using sockets for laser diodes. In hobbyist handhelds, with a capacitor as part of the circuit, even an extremely short disconnect-reconnect of the diode from the socket will instantaneously kill the laser diode. Soldering, where disconnect-reconnect can't happen nearly as easily, will always be safer.

Just add a dab of solder to the connecting pins ;) certainly easier than trying to solder wires onto the diode pins .

whats the power increas on an open can 803t?

Removing the can doesn't increase the power. The only reason for us to do that is when the LD window breaks/scratches/becomes loose, is becomes either screwed up or unusable... this makes it possible to salvage the diode. Just a money saver, essentially.

I thought removing the can did increase the power by a little because the light doesn't have to go through the diode window.

i was under this impression as well. Regardless of AR coating, some light is still bounced back. it must increase some what.

OK, fine. my post wasn't exactly correct.

The increase is 2-4mWs, depending on the operating conditions. It's not a drastic difference, like you get between, say, a 16x diode and a 112D. It's not changing the diode at all, so the difference will be minimal.

I did some test @ 150mA using the same 803T LD, module and LENS. First install LD in module and measured power at 150mA, removed the LD from the module and then removed the can. Reinstalled the LD in the module and measured power again at 150mA. The outputs was nearly the same, ::) I'll only do that if the window is broken.

How long has it been running at 150mA? I was going to crank it up, but then thegr8revealing's diode died at 150mA after 2 weeks. So, now i am very cautious about this...
