cool. tell us how it goes. have you got all the parts for it?

I have sorta decided that selling TPS circuits with the high side amp is pointless. for a few reasons;
the lavadrive already exists.
the TPS has a max switch current of 1.5A, this means that it will struggle to power a DVD burner diode from a single AA. it will work from 2 AA's but the lavadrive does this anyway.
the only real thing the TPS will be able to do over the lavadrive is power blueray/hddvd diodes from a single AA. and most people would use it for hd-dvd, which doesn't require a high side amp because the diode isn't electrically connected to the case.

So. should i still bother making them to sell? keeping in mind that the only thing they have over the lavadrive is powering hd-dvd diodes from a AA.
also the efficiency with 1.5V input driving a dhdvd is around 80%. (not tested) still this is better than anything else out there that can drive a laser from a AA.
and at 3V input (like with 2AA's or a lithium cell) driving a dvd burner it is 90% efficient (not tested), but so is the lavadrive

so who is interested in running a hddvd diode off a single AA?
 
even a burner at 200ma in a small form would be great. Its up to you, wheather you want to. I just learning and helping unless someone wants one made, i wouldnt sell them.

the input voltage can be between 0.3 and 5.5V, higher or lower than the output. thats a feature of the TPS chip and it doesn't require a high side amp for current measuring.
of course you would need to be careful with input and output currents and beware that at a lower input voltage, higher input currents are required to supply the same amount of power

the only difference (without the high side amp) is that the cathode of the laser can't be connected to ground. so for burners this means you can't let the diode contact a metal grounded case like in a flashlight. but for hddvd lasers it doesn't matter because the diode is insulated from the case

I'm going to make my first one with the schematic I showed you woop soon. I'm so excited. I hope I am able to solder things that small... with no solder mask...

Airy a tip: Go to dealextreme.com and buy lodestar solder paste its $3.73? the cheapest around. then take a needly or something small and wipe some solder paste(not to much) on the pads were the components go. You dont have to get each pin with some solder paste on just make a line across. then place components on and either put it in your toaster oven or use a paint stripper gun for reflow.
