Under the proper conditions, these things are surprisingly resilient. I lost the anode to one BR diode and had to open the can. In the process, the top crystal's adhesive came loose and I had to remove the whole thing to resurrect the violet. Surprisingly enough, the darn thing lit like new when the wire was reconnected to its post after the repair!

Too bad it later snapped off the other side when it was back in the housing. :(
 





could one of you (Mike, Daedal, Grey, etc) with the equipment post an I/V curve for this laser? It would help in finishing off the power board design for my short-lived GB.

Sure thing... Once I get this setup I'll write one up...

Although... it's good to note that I have seen a HUGE difference between the highest and lowest units in the batch... the best driver for these is one that relies on the PD voltage rather than a preset limit. ;)

I'm working on my curve -- I'm straight line to 55 mA !!!  Will I risk a few more ????

Is it 10 PM ??  Well anyway I risked my second blu LD to 65 mA.  No TEC.
The power meter is an IL 1400 A which has a correction graph showing 0.5 at 400 nM so I doubled my readings as shown here.  No matter, we are looking for the Knee -- that part of a curve over which the fool dares to tread  :D

These LD's do not show a pronounced curve at the knee but if you can tollerate my 1970's hand drawn curve, you will see that 55 mA is the edge of the cliff.  I don't know how long a diode will survrive there so be careful over 45 mA. I'm not your guide  ; :-/   I went to 65 mA for about 8 seconds and backed off.

Who's going to go to 70 mA first ??

Actually it's pretty linear all the way up to 60mA from your data points. A great little bit of science there! Best graph I've seen of the BR diode yet.

They might be sturdier than expected but I still won't run mine over 50mA.

Everyone must remember that while a LD can go to a specific mA and survive, It doesn't mean it will last for - say 10 hours or 3 or 40 .. . .. . . . . We have no long term data yet.

awesome, thanks for that plot. I hope that correction figure is right! Was this at 4.5-5V Vf?
 
Nice graph Mike.. :) But are you sure those power levels are correct? The difference between your graph and the one Leslie did is like night and day.. :o But your power levels do make more sense. Or maybe we have a different batch of diodes that the one Leslie tested.

I do agree with the measurements you have there and it makes total sense... Mine will follow shortly along with a conversion rate between BluRay and the LPM.

Well another reason the curve makes sense to me is you were able to pop balloons and light matches.. :o

A LPM conversion will be awesome. Since I received my trim pots today, I can play.. :D
 
Just wanted to let everyone know that the conversion rate I am getting is in the vicinity of ~1.75 from LPM-1 473nm reading to BluRay.

I.E. if your LPM gives you 4mW reading, your BluRay reading is 7mW :)

Wow - great post Mike! I love getting some solid data like that.
(And it tells me I can probably go up to 50ma without too much risk.)

You said this had no TEC - just the Aixiz module I guess, or was there more of a heatsink than that? Was it getting warm at those power levels?
