is there any difference between the aixiz module and the DX module?(other than focusing ring)
 





Hey all!

Still not got my LD, but I've had an email from USPS a few days ago. Looking good! 8-)

I've not been paying attention to the whole BluRay thing, I've been kept busy in the reds. But I have a few q's before I try not to fry my diode.

If this is in the wrong place plz del/move.

OK, I've read quite a bit about DDL's circuit, but that was before the blu-ray madness started.
I know they are VERY picky and need a higher voltage. Could some one please describe what's behind the hood of their working Bluray setups? e.g. component values, settings that seem to work best, batts, etc.

Do you think I could fit this into a $12 MDXL DX Torch? It was for my next DIY red, but I thought I could rip out the electronics and swap them with a new circuit for a cool blue/violet. :-)

Has anyone squashed one in a MDXL yet?

DDL's circuit isn't all that picky. I run my blu-ray diode off of a 9v battery, using the LM317 as a regulator. Instead of a small pot, I used a 2.2k 1/4 watt resistor and a 1k multi-turn pot to properly limit the current to it. This particular regulator was initially rigged for one of the GB reds, but has the range to properly handle the blu-ray diode as well. For protection, I have a 1uF tantalum cap and a 1n914 diode directly connected to the laser diode. In the driver board, I have a 47uF capacitor. More or less, this is the same driver that was listed here.
 
A couple answers :
1 -  I'm using the large chrome Aixiz module and no TEC.  It is clamped into a small vice to help aim it.  I've never felt it get warm even at 10 minutes of 40 mA.

2 - For testing, I'm using the LM713 regulator powered by a 6 volt gell cell charged to about 6.7 volts.  I nave some Ultra LDO's coming as soon as the UPS gets here (now 2 hours late)....

I hope to put all this into a Dorcy Jr. housing using its boost board.

Received mine today. :)

Now I have to think of a host... Since these take such little power I am considering a boost circuit for 1xAAA.
Power to the LD should be around 250mW (from Hemlock Mike's figures). Assuming a worst case driver efficiency of 50%, that would mean the battery would have to supply about 500mW. From a NiMH, that's about a 400mA draw. A stock 1xAAA Dorcy circuit "may" do the job. I have some 5mm UV LEDs that should substitute fine for a dummy load. Now I just have to find the time to do it.
 
Heads Up --- Sludge is coming down !!!

1: I got my Ultra LDO's today late. Hooked it up per spec.
Using a Dorcy Jr. as a source with a Li cell, I have 5.84 Volts input to the LM2936-5.0 regulator. Output is 4.95 volts STEADY ;D
With a 2.7 ohm series resistor to the BR LD, I get 45 mA drifting up to 46.2 mA.
This drift has been observed and reported by Gazoo & I but it is minimal.

2: Using the above breadboard setup (no TEC), I measured the Power output with my LM 1400 and LPM-1. The LM1400 has a correction factor of 2x at 400 nM. DDL reports a correction factor of 1.75x with the LPM. ---------

My results with the BR running for several minutes at 46 mA and using the provided factors -----

LM1400 --- 20.6 mW

LPM-1 ---- 20.02 mW

Pretty good correlation - may not land a man on Mars but the moon is easy access !!!!! ;D

I have to add that it is practically IMPOSSIBLE to calibrate using something that flickers back and forth like a hummingbird's wing... ::)

IT just so happens that my bluray setup, no matter how steady-powered, is just TOO jumpy (temperature I guess). When I put it on an LPM I get a reading that starts off somewhere around 4.9 and dribbles down to about 3.1 :-? :o This is with is powered by a steady supply and I was triple filtering the filtered output... meaning the diode was running from a capacitor pretty much (this is as stable as it gets!)

Nevertheless... I may have access to a stable unit in the near future that would help me calibrate the meters ;)

Mike, I believe your graph...and Daedal's conversion. Running at 35ma's I get a reading of 6.42mw's on the LPM without the filter. 6.42 x 1.75 = 11.235mw's. It doesn't correspond perfectly with your graph but as we all know every LD has it's own personality :) Thanks for double checking.
 
DDL --

I'm not seeing the "jumpy" stuff. Mine reads stable numbers. Little filtering. Just the basic cap across the LD.
The correction curve on my SPER Scientific meter is too steep to figure a correction factor at 405. It's showing about 26 mW - but I'm not betting on that.
Remember that the thermal sensor can't be touched too often. It has to get to a stable temp or the readings will be off. Neat meters but with tempermental considerations.

You are on the Moon !! I put in a 10 ohm resistor to drop mine to 34 mA.

Results: using the LPM-1 ---

5.54 mW x 1.75 = 9.7 mW --- Pretty close :D Your LD curve may vary.
I think my first BR (RIP) was a little better.

I just received my trimpots and I will be doing another test at 45ma's as soon as I get it soldered in. But yup, I am on the moon and it is very reassuring to be there. ;D

Breaking news :D

I used a resistor decade box and brought the Ild up to 35.2 mA. I let it sit there for 4 minutes and took another reading.

35.2 mA ---- LPM-1: 6.32 x 1.75 => 11.06 mW Not too bad.

This first one will be built into the Dorcy Jr which is presently powering it in breadboard fashion.   Next will be a R-B labbie with two power supplies and maybe a small TEC.    Then a blue pocket spirograph !!!

Now comes the machining to fit it all into the Dorcy head. That takes more time than the electronics.

Too many projects --- Sssooooo little time  :(
