Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 28% More Than AixiZ!!!

Yeah, I think this would be the ticket to win, last night we ended up having to flip a coin to decide who got the 2-tone beauty from Dave and who got the polished groove ... good thing I like chrome, dammit!  ::)

"Yeah, Honey - Yours is prettier but mine's slammin just over 250mW"... C'mon, Jay - You've just GOTTA make these available!

The only problem with them...

Is that they are expensive for just the lens alone. Then you have to destroy an AixiZ glass lens, so your at $40 bucks already. As you can see from the pictures, the modification to the lens nut is not too bad, but making that tiny custom spacer is a precise operation!

It wouldn't be worth it for people to pay $40 dollars in parts, plus another $20 bucks for me to do the mod...

For AixiZ, Igor's lenses will be worth the wait. But this is a nice lens to compare his with! It may be that the supplier has a module or lens nut for the lens. I have not gotten an answer for that question yet...
Jay

Edit: I will be doing a few of these AixiZ mods while we are waiting for Igor's lenses. But these will be expensive. I will only be making mayby $15 bucks for the work if I charge $60 dollars plus $3 dollars for shipping.

Re: Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 18% Above Meredith G

When you look at it from a "mass" marketing standpoint, I agree - $60-75 is a lot to shell out for a "mod" ... But looking at it from let's say an initial $200 investment to build a really NICE 6X (give or take, of course, but you either have spent the $$ doing your own R&D over the years giving you the ability TO do it, or you are going to pay someone else for THEIR time and labor, knowledge, etc) then a 26% increase in output looks a lot like $52.

Tie that in with the fact that there really IS no bigger BR diode at any price, and the fact that there is a definitive threshold governing the safe (ish) operation of a 6X diode ... Well, NOW that $60-75 doesn't look so bad, considering it allows you to push the envelope, so to speak, of BR handheld technology.

Again, great work, as always - keep in mind though that price sometimes becomes irrelevant when you are dealing with progressive technology, at least short-term.

Please don't make me PM you and beg, dammit  ;D ;D

Re: Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 18% Above Meredith G

I know what you mean about saying that up to a point, money is not the issue. For me, It is worth the money and time I spent on the modification...

It sounds like you are of the same mind.

That said, there are a couple of things that I would also take into consideration. I don't want to disrupt all of the work, testing, and not to mention money spent, that Igor has put into his up-coming GB on the glass lenses.

Second, I would feel better about first getting his lenses. That way we can compare the difference first hand. At this point, although I know that this is a great lens for blu-ray, for all we know, his lenses may be better yet! :) But we won't know until we compare them.

So, yes I would do the mod for $20 plus parts and shipping. But I would think that waiting for Igor's lenses would be the best thing to do.

Even so, I have ordered another! :P I have to have at least one for Meredith, and one for AixiZ...

Do you know if Meredith sells just the Meredith Hosuing with no lens included?

Re: Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 18% Above Meredith G

Do these lens reflect light back at the diode slowly damaging it?

Not sure, you would have to call or e-mail them...

That would be a good idea. All of the machine work is mostly done on a Meredith module. There would only need to be the drilling out of their lens holder with a size 'E' bit to fit this larger diameter lens... You would need a custom spacer for on top of the lens as well. The spacer holds the lens down in place.  (see pictures) The Meredith glass module has it's own spacer for this as well. But the size is wrong for this lens...

It's the opposite effect...

This lens lets more light out! ;) And since it is glass, it will not degrade like an acrylic lens does at this kind of power!

I must report back to show how it is a good fit for AixiZ as well! :D

That is... if you have a lathe, because the modification to the metal AixiZ glass lens nut needs to be precise...

Measurements for the custom spacer:
Height - .220
O.D. - .246
I.D. - 7/32 bit

I compared the power reading with my Pocket Mini 6X which has an AixiZ acrylic. It is running at 181mA's:

* AixiZ acrylic - 171mW's.
* 405-G-1 glass lens - 215mW's! :o

This is a 26% increase in power over AixiZ acrylic! I have a 'freak' 6X in one of my key chain builds that is putting out 215mW's through an AixiZ acrylic at only 183mA's. This lens will give it 26% more power. That's 270mW's in a Key chain!  :)

Pretty cool how the AixiZ glass lens module was able to be inverted to fit this 405nm glass lens and still be just the right length to also have the focus ring on there too! 8-)
Jay

Tip: Use some of that aluminum tape for a wrap around the threads. This will let you get a pretty good grip on the lens nut in your chuck without damage. It's that really sticky aluminum tape for heat duct.

Dang! 270mW from a keychain laser...that would have to set a world record right there. ;D

Re: Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 26% More Than AixiZ!

Excellent find! This lens will be absolutely essential for my future blu-ray builds.  Talk about "hot option"! :D

Brew City Music - It took the violety goodness of blu-ray to get my wife interested. Now she wants some "beam" of her own. We will be building in the near future.

Re: Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 26% More Than AixiZ!

It is HOT alright! :)

The dot is very nice too. Wants to burn everything! Your Pocket Mini Kit is shipping today. (Monday) I hope your build goes well! Post the results in my 'kit' thread! :)

leukoplast, that particular diode is only at 183mA's! It could easily reach over 300mW's if I turned it up some. But I am of the more conservative mind set...

Seems your diode doesn't abide by those rules :P ;D

Whats the output with the AixiZ acrylic with your 212mW one? About 200mW?

Re: Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 26% More Than AixiZ!

Well, I could only do a comparison if I put an AixiZ acrylic lens into a Meredtih mount, which does fit. Because that diode is in a Meredith module...

But instead of doing that, I think that Meredith glass is around 10% more power that AixiZ acrylic for blu-ray. I would think it would be around 180mW's. (correction, 198mW's) A closer to normal 6X diode. Not like the 'freak' 6X diode that I have in my key chain.

That particular diode is a very high efficiency diode! I have found 3 different 6X diodes that are similar like this. But that one is the highest 8-)

Re: Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 26% More Than AixiZ!

Still, a jump from about 180mW (estimated with Acrylic) to 270mW is amazing! That's what, a 50% increase of power over the acrylic? :o

Re: Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 26% More Than AixiZ!

Oh wait a minute, your right! the other 6X diode in my Pocket Mini build showed a 26% increase from AixiZ acrylic to the 405-G-1 lens. So that would mean my 212mW Meredith 6X build (that is 250 with the new lens) would be about 198mW's with AixiZ acryic.

Less of a difference between AixiZ acrylic and Meredtih Glass. I never really compared blu-ray between these two lenses because of the different modules. But I have compared the difference between Meredith acrylic and Meredith glass. That difference is huge! Like 30%.

And I know that the above comparison (Pocket Mini 6X build), shows a 26% difference between AixiZ acrylic and this new 405-G-1 glass lens...

The 270mW scenario your talking about is a Key chain build that I have which is already at 215mW's with AixiZ acrylic. 26% on top of that would be about 270mW's! :)

26% would make Warren Buffet jealous. :D

Re: Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 26% More Than AixiZ!

FrankoRob, your the first one to ask, and to order one...

Your custom fit AixiZ mod will be in tomorrow's mail. (Tuesday)

Important: Since the glass lens is mounted close to the bottom of the inverted lens nut, you must be aware of the possibility of screwing it all the way past the focal point and into the diode!

So just be careful of that. This is just the modified metal nut with the 405-G-1 glass lens mounted, with a finger grip focus ring.

I'll leave the spring modification for you to get from your module and cut it down some as shown in the pictures. Please post back with your happy comments! :)
