Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 28% More Than AixiZ!!!

Re: Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 26% More Than AixiZ!

I have been working on this new lens and Aixiz assembly for a couple of weeks now.

I just ran across this picture of the original glass lens disassembled:
glasslens1.jpg

The plano-convex lens on the right has the most curvature. *
This is the assembly before modification for the new 405nm Hi-Power NA lens and SS retainer.

You power-hungry types are going to love this lens.

Got it! Sending PM. There are a few in front of you and I am waiting on more AixiZ glass lenses which have been shipped...

rkcstr, your two will be in tomorow's mail. Please let me know what you think when you test them! :)

Re: Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 28% More Than AixiZ!

Hi Jay, I have just received your modified AixiZ lens nut and....wow, here is my first test....

As you suggested, I've checked the length of the lens nut, just to avoid any contact with the diode, in my case I was needing a 0.8 mm thick washer; so I have found a brass washer which, with abrasive paper and a little bit of patience, has been reduced to a thickness of 1.2 mm, just to allow focusing to infinite. Fig. 1 shows the spacer in place.
I had no heart to cut the spring, so I have applied a teflon strip on the nut threads, to guarantee the right resistance to move...

Now, the tests: Fig. 2 shows the Output Power with the "standard" lens, while Fig. 3 shows the OP with your modify: from a "standard" 120mW the OP has jumped to 156 mW, that means a 30% more!!!!  :D

FireMyLaser asked what's the beam dia at aperture: focused to infinite, the larger dia of the oval beam is about 5 mm, while the narrow dia is about 2 mm. (measured at a distance of 1 cm.)

What can I say? I'm enthusiast of your modification and of the OP improvement! For sure the next IgorT special lens will produce a less elongated oval beam and I'll buy it, but in the meanwhile... 156mW...wow ;D ;D ;D

Re: Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 28% More Than AixiZ!

Glad you like it! :)

The oval 'out of focus' dot is due to the diode. Put that lens in a red build and see the difference! :) In a red, it will give you just about the same increase as a Meredith glass lens. But with 405nm, as you reported, the increase is amazing!...

Re: Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 28% More Than AixiZ!

so will you be selling a whole package of the pre-drilled aixiz lens casing with spacer and lens or are you just selling the lenses as of right now?

Re: Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 28% More Than AixiZ!

IIRC... I saw it posted by jayrob somewhere that he's already selling them for
$60.00 + shipping... 8-)

@Jay Correct me if I'm wrong... ;)

How do the AixiZ glass lenses look? I know they are something like +/- 10% but what about the splatter?

Re: Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 28% More Than AixiZ!

They are about +5% with red builds, but not good for blu-ray. Three elements and AR coated for red.

As far as splatter, I don't know... I would have to take a bunch of pictures but I don't want to mess with it...

They are cheap enough to try. You can buy one for like $5 bucks.

Please read a few of the posts, because there is some side 'splash' with the lens. Not a bother for most people, but some may not like it...
Jay

Yes Jay, there is some 'splash' also if it is very difficult to show it with pictures; the best is the annexed one (with the beam focused to infinite), while checking again the output power, because the thermal sensor surface is sufficiently 'matte' to reduce the glare (*). Also when the beam is focused to the smallest 'burning' point, a small thin pale segment is visible (about two mm on each side of the burning point), but it doesn't affect the burning point itself.

After the first OP test showing 156 mW, several others have shown 154 mW (as per the annexed pict.), confirming the 28 % increase, as you have already said. ;)

(*) I think that I'll need to get a 10x10 in steel sheet, sanded and black anodized, to take good pictures of the beams, also taking into account the fast power increase of the last BR diodes..... :D

Re: Awesome 405nm Glass Lens! 18% Above Meredith G

hey Jay, something just crossed my mind.

I could be wrong, but maybe painting your custom aluminum spacer flat black would take care of the funky side splash. Having anything reflective inside lens cavity is generally a "no no" in optics.
