When I saw the movie I thought it looked absolutely stunning but the plot was lacking.
But these people are just being obsessive and completely idiotic. Can't some people understand that this movie is fiction, i.e not real and that you can't live on whatever the planet was called?!
I admit some of them do understand this and are just depressed the our planet isn't like that, but come on did it take a movie for you to see we are screwing up the Earth?

yeah, I guess that first pic isn't completely furry... and yeah, WTF do people here have these pictures anyway....

There are limited basic storylines. Some of them are: Fish out of water, man vs.machine, coming of age, good vs.evil, etc. My personal favorie is fish out of water. In order to be successful a film must follow one of these themes. However, it must also tell that universal story in a unique way. If you want to understand more, PM me. I will give you some recommended readings about aesthetics and aesthetic literature. There are a couple of other "requirements" that are a bit more esoteric. This film does both AND is the showcase for the advancements in CGI that have been attained.

The universal story being told in this film is; "going native." That is why it is being compared to Pocahantas and Dances With Wolves. Those are both "going native" stories. "Anti-technology" and mysticism are key components in the "going native" story. This film satisfies all the requirements of the story. This story harkens back to classics such as Little Big Man and A Man Called Horse." If the story line is predictable to you, you are probably watching too many "going native" stories. LOL! In addition there are other sub-themes at work that drive the plot.

This film also tells that universal story in a way that it has never been told before. With the advancement in our own technology it was time for this story to be told in space . . . . Welcome to Pandora and the Na'Vi

The CGI in the film is worth the price of admission alone. Add the quality of today's 3-D and you have definitely gotten your money's worth. The mix of CGI and real life are virtually seamless. Although the "cartoon" portions of the CGI are most recognizable (and no, it is not perfect yet), the mix of "real life" CGI and "cartoon" CGI is very smooth. After viewing the film, I challenge people to try to figure out what was CGI and what was live. Try to tell how much of the "background/scene" was real and how much was CGI.

I am one of the most cynical viewers possible (as you can probably tell from this much too long post) and I "bought" the vast majority of the CGI. For example. even with the full awareness that Sam Worthington was "able bodied", I completely bought the CGI manipulation that made him into a paraplegic.

In conclusion, go see the film. See it in the theater. If possible, see it in 3-D. It will NOT translate nearly as well to the home screen. If you wait to Netflix it, you will be missing some of the very reasons you should see the film.

Will, you "like" it? Who knows. If you miss it, you will be missing a film that may be talked about (and studied) for years to come.

Peace,
dave

Well, i always like special effects, especially if well done, so probably i will see it, when it come out here :p, but, let me say, with all the fanfare and ads that film makers do each time that they take out a "new" film, you may also expect to find some original storyline, at least a pair of times in a year ..... ;)

Basically you need to see avatar in 3D or you're just not going to get the full 'Avatar Experience'. Without the 3D it would just be your typical CGI sci-fi movie like Transformers. With the 3D it's an epic unforgettable movie.

I didn't think Neytiri was all that hot. The blue people were too tall and their facial features looked kind of...ugly to me.

-Mark

Ugly is an understatement.

I didn't thinks the 3D was all that great either.... compared to some Disney 3D movies I've seen in the past. The images didn't "pop out" at me like I expected.

Finally... The marines would've killed them all. :gun:

I only had the 2D option, I wish I had a 3D theater somewhat near me because I'm getting sick of hearing about what I'm missing out! :gun:
Still I really liked the movie, and Transformers doesn't even come close (2 ½h car wreck).

On topic: I will be seeing avatar in 3D tomorrow, my friend with serious interest in CGI and professional animation said it was awesome but limited plot. Is there anything interesting which can be done with lasers and circularly-polarised filters? The 3D goggles in the cinema over here use them, but they don't seem to do much to laser beams.

Avatar was suitably epic, and managed to capture the attention for the entire length of the show. Story was OK, not too brilliant but not bad either, but the technology made it a staggering and memorable experience.

EDIT: Post 808!

IMHO Avatar causes depression in people who can see what is going on with the world, not necessarily that they cannot go to Pandora. It is sobering that our species has caused devastation that makes the worst scenes in Avatar look like a practical joke in comparison.

The worst of it occurs when one realizes that we would displace the natives, OR WORSE. Then realizing: there isn't much anyone can do to change anything, there is no way out, you are part of the corporate greed based system, bagged, tagged, barcoded and barricaded with no way out except maybe suicide. Make no mistake, if the corporations had their way, you would be a COMMODITY whose sole purpose in life is to buy stuff, and value it over anything else including family, love, and God.

It's TIME TO WAKE UP! Perhaps it's time to unite the clans and fight back by hurting them in the only place it counts- the wallet.
