Argon laser meltdown

Despite it being "wasteful", I was kind of glad he did that. I was curious to see how much more power you could squeeze out of them before they'd pop. Obviously the 20A or whatever it died at was too much, but that was about double it's rating.

Notice the amount of cooling he used (i.e. almost none). It would last substantially longer (maybe even an hour :p) or be capable of higher current if it had a properly secured cooling fan.

That's not how PhotonInduction rolls! 'e wants to see it go pop or he's not avin it!

He would run 8 KW through it if he had to.

Wrong answer lol his variac goes FAR!!! UP

Okay, I think we've lost some people. Let me outline the conversation thus far:

me: *posts video
things: "nice to know they fail at 20A"
me: "they wouldn't if he had cooling"
guyfromhe and others: "he dunt rohll thut way dawg"
me: "you're missing the point"

Still i cant believe he did that and some of us dont even own a gas laser.
I was like what a amazing color wish i had it. then after seeing the end result i was sad.
i have no gas. and he likes to waste it...

Yes we all get what you are saying... If you did it under the right conditions you could run the laser with more power / for longer... Tho even with proper cooling I would be surprised if it ran for very long at that power before something else catastrophically failed.

In any case it's like posting a video of a demolition derby and saying "if those cars didn't drive into each other they would run fine"

He wasn't trying to make it brighter he was trying to start it on fire.

No, it's like posting a video to a demolition derby, having someone (Things) say "Wow, cars only last for 20 minutes - good to know" and then replying with "this doesn't apply to cars in most situations"

My comment was directed at Things, not the video.

OH! my bad :)

Well, in a way, this helps. I always wondered how sudden it'd be if one of my argons somehow lost cooling due to a stuck fan or whatever, and I had to run and shut the whole deal down.

Seems like I'd have a bit of time, but not much, and also that when it did fail, I'd likely uh, really know. So in a way, even if not a realistic failure mode, this is educational.
