Anything but iPhone (thoughts on Desire, Galaxy S)

Re: Anything but iPhone (thoughts on HTC Desire)

Wait for the iPhone HD (4G) :takeit:

Re: Anything but iPhone (thoughts on HTC Desire)

I just got my Droid Incredible. It hasn't given me any problems so far. Just make sure you get an app killer app or the battery won't last long between charges.

Thx for the heads up! I'd appreciate a link to that app, thanks

To all others, note that the Incredible is the U.S. version of Europe's Desire:
Droid Incredible review -- Engadget

Apparently "3G" is not the same in both Continents, and unlike GSM, you cannot just alter a setting to change radio signals (frequency band; 1800 vs. 1900MHz, I beleve it is)... :undecided:

p.s. Do you like it??????????

EDIT: I take that back; the Incredible has some upgraded features - some of which could even be considered to place the Incredible in it's own "class". The upgrades that caught my eye was the 8MP (vs. 5MP camera, which may in turn also affect the Video capabilities) and a massiv 8GB internal memory (vs, the Desire's measly 575MB; this is not a minor difference). Both still work with 32GB SDHC cards, but having 8GB internally is very impressive, imho!

I don't have a link to it. I got it through the market on the phone itself. It is called "advanced task killer." I got the free version. There is a $5 version too. Here's the dev's website.

Excellent, thx!

p.s Do you like it???? The phone, I mean...?

Btw, is your display free of this "pink-cast" problem I've read a lot about (at least in connection with the Desire). Just call up HTC's own website; they use a lot of neutral gray backgrounds. If they look a bit pink to you...

Re: Anything but iPhone (thoughts on HTC Desire)

Hi y'all doin' tonight :D
(or this morning, depending on your location...)

My HTC Kaiser (WinMobile6) is on its last leg and I was planning to buy HTC's current WM6.5 phone. But what do you know, my local T-Mobile provider (Austria) does not have and nor are they planning to introduce any new HTC Windows phones.

Instead, they recommended I go with the HTC Desire, an Android 2.1, AMOLED touch-screen phone. It looks like a beauty & has all the bells & whistles I need (such as HSDPA/3G, WLAN, quad-band, GPS/Compass, 400x800 AMOLED, decent cam and last but certainly not least... a 3.5mm jack!!!)

It's supposedly an iPhone killer, which sounds good to me (I still have a beef with Steve Jobs that goes way back to the first gen iPods - which couldn't / wouldn't play MP3s... :gun:)

Here's a review for those that have never heard of it (it might also be listed under a different name in with your carrier):
Mobile Phones UK - HTC Desire

Features of the HTC Desire include:

  • 5 megapixel camera with face detection, autofocus and flash
  • Video recording
  • Display: AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with pinch-to-zoom capability, 480 X 800 pixels (3.7 inches) with auto-rotate
  • GPS receiver with digital compass, Google Maps, HTC Footprints and geo-tagging
  • Music player (aac, .amr, .ogg, .m4a, .mid, .mp3, .wav, .wma formats)
  • FM radio
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, Email
  • Ringtones: MP3 ringtones
  • Internet: GPRS, EDGE, HSPA (7.2 Mbps download, 2Mbps upload)
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.1 with Enhanced Data Rate, mini-USB 2.0, Wi-Fi, 3.5mm audio jack
  • Memory: 576 MB RAM plus microSD memory card (up to 32GB)
  • Vibration alert
  • Quadband GSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) plus HSPA/WCDMA (900/2100 MHz)
  • Size: 119 x 60 x 11.9 mm
  • Weight: 135g
  • Talktime: 390 - 400 minutes
  • Battery standby: 340 - 360 hours

Last but certainly not least, I would be getting it from my provider (T-Mobile) for €100 / $120 (with contract extension, of course).

Sounds like a plan to me; the only other phone on my short list is a Samsung AMOLED + WM 6.5... it's name has slipped my mind, but I will edit this post as soon as I find that puppy ;)

Thanks for your input

***EDIT***
Apparently it's EU's version of the Nexus One... anyone own that? Satisfied with it?

Re: Anything but iPhone (thoughts on HTC Desire)

I have the droid (milestone that I like alot.
I usually go off of a site called Phone arena that has very indepth reviews as well as cnet is also help full. HTC Desire (Phone Arena)

Task killers are a must for these multitasking phones and I use one called "automatic task killer" were you select the apps you want to always be running and the ones not on the list are turned off whenever the screen is turned off.

good luck

Here's a one week update for the phone. The battery life is the only issue I have with it so far. There is at least one battery that has a higher capacity that fits under the stock battery cover. I read something about a 2250 mah battery being made for it.

I assume this pick-cast issue has soemthing to do with the screen having a pink hue to it. If that is the case, I don't see anything like that.

Yeah, I heard that despite the energy-efficient AMOLED display, the Desire drains the battery pretty quickly (one reason a mate of mine went with the HTC Legend instead). I guess there's no such thing as the ultimate mobile... :-/

Re: Anything but iPhone (thoughts on HTC Desire)

Argh.

I've been waiting for my provider (T-Mobile) to "restock" the Desire (Incredible) for MONTHS now... :banghead:

It's to the point that I've been eyeing a recent competitor, the Samsung i9000 Galaxy S. I'm sure Samsung uses another name for it in the U.S. / Asian markets.

Here's a good review of the phone. It's large, heck, larger than even a freaking iPhone  but oddly enough, due to it's very light weight (118g) and ultra-thin profile, it's not really all that bad. And the 400x800 Super-AMOLED screen is supposed to out do even the recent HTC offerings - pretty much everything else, with *maybe* the exception of the iPhone 4G... .

It has a proprietary 1GHz processor, 2nd "video" camera, 8GB on-board memory plus a 32GB SD card slot. That and all the standards (GPS w/Google Maps, quadband, BT (3.0!), and so forth. Heck, it's pretty damn near perfect but the only thing stopping me is the Andorid OS version (2.1)! As it will be a "branded" phone, I'm not sure I can just download 2.2 when it comes out and install it over my existing setup...

Anyone have experience with upgrading Android on branded phones?

Thx &

p.s. More stats:
GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA/HSUPA • WAP/MMS • A-GPS • OS: Android 2.1 • CPU: 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird • GSM-Quadband (850/900/1800/1900) • UMTS-Triband (900/1900/2100) • Farbdisplay (16 Mio. I was in the neighborhood the other day and decided to stop by m T-Mobile dealer, who happened to just get a fresh shipment in... including the Galaxy. I asked him about upgrades and he told me it's not a prbolem, with Samsung's "Kies", I can update the phone at anytime.

So I just had to take one... :p

i've had it for roughly three days now and I have to say this thing simply rocks  It would be hard for me to "review" it, per say, as it's my first touch-screen phone. From what I read though, its only peer (HW-wise) is the iPhone 4G and (more or less) the HTC Desire / Incredible. This phone has everything ...well everything but the kitchen sink. And a 445nm class IV lazor.

My last phone (HTC Kaiser, aka T-Mobile MDA III) also had Internet, GPS and so on, but the processor and display just couldn't let you really make use of those tools. With the Galaxy, I almost forgot to go back to my Notebook while surfing; that's how good the display and the response time is!
:topic:

So if you're in the market for a touch phone, you owe it to yourself to consider the Galaxy. Don't let the measurements scare you off - you won't notice this phone tucked away in a jeans-pocket (and even less so in a suit pocket)!

My next phone is probably going to be a samsung phone to replace my aging nexus one. Not the galaxy s, the next revision probably.

My next phone is probably going to be a samsung phone...
FWIW, I'm still quite happy with my Galaxy S. Battery-charge life is maybe the only weak spot; that and the fact that the Galaxy S has no visual indicator for missed calls / messages / Network connection Type. At first I didn't think I would care but it's actually a pain since I have to grab the phone and check it if I was out of hearing distance from the phone for some time...

App-wise, I've downloaded a few cool apps and haven't really found Android to be "lacking" in Apps. For example, Shazam is available for Android, etc. I also DL'ed a bar-code reader ("shopSavvy"), unit conversion tool ("Convertpad"), GPS Status, Wikidroid, Currency Converter, IMDb, Engadgetm Minesweep, Speedx 3D, Robo Defense, Angry Birds (beta), Mystique (Ch1,2&3).

I have a slightly modded (removed bloatware and other little tweaks) Vibrant (T-mobile version of Galaxy S) and although it is a good phone and a great improvement over my G1 (CM6 modded) I now am certain that android just like an iOS is not what I want. I am waiting for N9 (nokias n900 successor) to be released and will be buying that little gizmo instead.

My GF has n900 and I absolutely love that phone no matter how many bugs and missing features it has. N900 actually feels like a little computer, android and ios feel just too simple :) with maemo/meego I can feel that I have full power of linux at my disposal :)

You NEED WebOS. I think WebOS may already be what you want Meego to be in the future.

Fully open linux operating system with a very active developing community that is actually supported by Palm (instead of squashed like Apple).

The cards metaphor is by far the best multitasking solution available on a mobile phone today. True, active, live multitasking. It's more like using a computer than any other mobile OS available right now.

The Pre 2 should be coming to Verizon soon, you owe it to yourself to at least check it out.
