Anything but iPhone (thoughts on Desire, Galaxy S)

^I just got a Palm Pixi through Sprint and I LOVE webOS and the cards system. It's by far one of the best phones I've ever used.

I currently run a G1 and a Mytouch 3G Rooted W/Cyanogen 6.1 Froyo. Could not live without being able to tether my notebook wirelessly. Been a long time XDA member since my Kaiser. Next phone will be a dual core snapdragon android unit.;)

You NEED WebOS. I think WebOS may already be what you want Meego to be in the future.

Fully open linux operating system with a very active developing community that is actually supported by Palm (instead of squashed like Apple).

The cards metaphor is by far the best multitasking solution available on a mobile phone today. True, active, live multitasking. It's more like using a computer than any other mobile OS available right now.

The Pre 2 should be coming to Verizon soon, you owe it to yourself to at least check it out.

Thank you :).

I had a pleasure of tinkering with Palm Pre (sprint). My friend found a device in department store. The phone was abused, had sand inside, cracks on its body. So it was decided that the phone will be adopted rather than returned arguing that it will be in better hands anyway (not my decision). And since he had no Sprint contract and the device was deactivated I was asked to bypass the network activation in order to use it as an MP3 player with wifi access :) Which I did.

By the time I was done with it, it had a fresh os imaged which was slightly modified to allow wifi activation rather than sprint activation, was rooted and other good things done to it.

Still I prefer maemo/meego based devices. They feel closer to a real hand-held computer than anything else I've tried. Linux apps can be ported relatively easy. I can run debian (compiled for ARM) on it and have access to debian arm repository, even android was ported onto it.

At this point Im in very hard and prolonged negotiations with my better half :) I want to give her my spanking new and shiny vibrant and take her n900 for myself. She is resisting with vigor even though she is arts major and not a geek at all....

Great site, great phone (I had the T-Mobile MDA Vario III version). I have to thank XDA for Kaiser Tweak

I paid about €230 ($320) for my Galaxy S so I don't have the guts to "root" it... . A shame, seeing as I'm stuck with Eclair (although I don't have a real understanding of all the improvements Froyo will bring).

Where did you find a galaxy s for that kind of money? That's a good deal.
Sorry, I should have noted that said price was in conjunction with my T-Mobile contract extension. I paid €20 ($28) for my HTC Kaiser three years ago under the same circumstances, making the Galaxy S a very expensive "contract" deal... .
