8X Diode Murder fund

yup, i have my choice of mixing LG and Pioneer drives. and one other one i tihnk, but i'd have to call him and ask what its called, and either look it up, or run it by you guys.

When all this happens IgorT Im going to send you that LPC-819 diode, that 660nm short closed can red. brand spanking new, 1cm long pins, no heatsink, they came in a sealed bubble tray.

The seller sais they are STRONGER than our much loved LPC-815 LOC diode... I have yet to determine this, I will go hook one up right now and set it to 350mA just to see if it survives! so it will give you a lil data to start with. If this turns out to be true, we just got a new connect for BETTER red lasers!!! that hasnt happened in a while!! other than that 500mW sony diode that costs a fortune lol.

I could supply these for quite cheap ;)

So the strategy is to test both diodes for a better data set? Or is it to push one to even higher currents and then set the cycle machine to like 25 hours instead of 100?

The Cycler Circuit is made to cycle diodes to death, to learn their lifetime at a certain power..

It can't be set in hours, besides why should it? :yh:

It is set to stop counting when the diode goes LED....

That's the kind of enthusiasm i was hoping for! :yh:

Otherwise, the testing will be a new thread with the link here and the test protocol up for discussion.

How many drives do you need for yourself? I need four if you order some, you MIGHT (or SHOULD?) get a better price!

Please ask for further quantity discount, there is no reason we don't order more if they are cheaper, i'll ask some people if they want one in the meanwhile...

I dont need any really, but im willing to buy one to make it a flat order of 5 units, OR more... but 5 is how many we need to order to get the deal. that SHOULD warrant a fairly large discount...

This is like a mini GB with really expensive items lol

Let me know your thoughts on the LPC-819 diode IgorT :)

Sounds interesting, i already forgot that you wanted to send them to me for testing....

Looks promissing!

I can put 10 diodes on my Cycler Cct at the same time! Even more if i use the external relay and power source!
Up to 10 the cycler can power the drivers itself.... It's a good unit!

Wow IgorT, I admire your patience and will to post such big replies and give detailed explanations.. What I wanted to ask is the following: Considering the difference between diodes regarding their efficiency, what's the purpose of killing 2 quite expensive lasers? Let's say you push these 2 diodes to their limits and see how much they live. Does this mean that the other diodes we are going to use, will last that long?

Thanks, Peter

Pushing them to the point of death gives no info.... :(

Pushing one to 400mW and then the other depending on the results of the first gives a LOT of INFO!!
EDIT: If the first dies too soon, we set the second one lower. If the first just keeps going, we know there is more power to be had!!!!

We have to take the MOST scientific approach to this! That's why i want feedback on my testing protocol!

I described it a page or two ago....

IgorT, myself, Hemlock Mike, Kenom, GooeyGus, and a few others have been doing this all along. This is just the first time, that I know of, that the membership has helped like this.

We used to sell a laser or two to help defray the costs, but lately new "dealers" have undercut us to the point where we cannot afford to keep it up.

Oh well -- Markets change -- Dinosaurs go extinct

Peace,
dave

Yes, my LPM, Diode Analyzer and Cycler Cct all cost a lot of money and time to build!

That's where the lazor money went into. That and the diode/lens research. I wish i didn't make that stupid spherical lens mistake, that lost me $700 in one swoop. :yabbem:

Worst of all PP doesn't work in my country! I can put money in but not take it out...
So the money always went in circles. Lasers sold = more diodes & experiments = more lenses & experiments = money gone. :yabbem:

But the rest of the lens research, while still expensive, eventually resulted in the right lenses for our hobby, i hope..
At least everyone knew what specs to look for, altho we would have discovered that lens without wasting all that money... But not learned as much about lenses!

I also wouldn't have found my medium, which i hope can still be of some use when better beam specs and sharper focus (better burning at longer distances at the cost of a few percent of power) are desired...

Dave: We're not dinosaurs just yet, we seem to be doing fine with the research here...
If anything, we are doing great as a forum, to fund this SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENT!

Please run it by me, before making the purchase, i want to add as many drives as i can to lower the end cost!

You do get more discount with more drives, yes?

We should move this to PM....

No, but let's say one goes to 600mW and the other dies at 450mW.

Then the second one will save many asses ;)

NO, that's the WRONG approach!

We HAVE to start with a lower power FIRST, and then decide the second power BASED ON THE RESULTS of the first MURDER..

I propose MURDER be written in all capital letters, like Dave!

It is MURDER when it's expensive..

Did i say that i love you guys?

DONATE DONATE DONATE!

In my three hours of sleep i dreamt we got three diodes! :D

No, but seriously, TWO diodes is almost a necessity, to check for consistency of results OR if the results can be improoved!

Three would probably yield little additional data, unless we get really unlucky and pick FREAKS! However this is EXACTLY WHY i propose two lowest efficiencies out of SEVERAL be selected for the MURDER!!!

EDIT: And i'm talking about picking two lowest efficiencies out of FIVE DIODES!!!!
Yes, five, i have an 8x here from Dave, this here will yield two more, and i'm buying two with the last of my money..

So out of five the three freaks go into LAZORES, the two "weaklings" get MURDERED!!!

I definitelly WILL... I'll post full PIV plots, and Cycler Cct test results.

Did i say that the cycler can cycle 10 diodes at once?
More if i engage the external relay!

I can test the reds side by side with the 8x!

In fact, i intend to test GGWs at the same time, blasting into digital timers!

Hey Igor - I just donated $25, so is that enough for a super high wavelength phr shipped to the UK?

Rob

Rob

Absolutelly!

That gives you a PHR SuperFreak with a PIV plot and a Long Closed Can red, is that good? :)

Now we're cooking!

ONLY $60 MORE

Peace,
dave

It's almost a done deal! This was awesome guys! Thank you! You've done everyone on the forum a big favor! :D

One more GGW diode or some PHR freaks, and we're there!

I'll still need to know the diode requests - what diodes i need to ship WHERE...
So you'll have to PM me with your shipping address, the amount of your donation and your wishes... :yh:

EDIT: Otherwise, there needs to be a CORRECTION to the first post! The second diode is NOT for me, i'm buying my own from my own money! And one for Glenn.

This will give me a total of FIVE LG 8x and Pioneer 8x diodes to chose from! (the combination needs to be arranged with Dark before purchase but he said he has free choice, i think two LG / three Pioneer would be ideal if Dark needs a Pioneer, the rest is paid for by me and this fund). Ideally i'd test one LG and one Pioner...

This will allow me to test FIVE diodes (there is one already here), to select the MURDER candidates from. I explained the reasoning earlier (efficiency cutoff).

We will see some consistency data from the PIV plots, but the real test will be the Cycler! Then it's all about hours. Hopefully days! Fingers crossed everyone!

Ideally i'd leave the other three diodes rest while the first and later the second are running...
That way i could then adjust the currents accordingly, from the results of the test already (so i don't set them too high)...

Except Dave will probably want his sooner @420mW by default...
Besides, if everyone agrees, this should be our target power for the first 8x MURDER candidate... There are many diodes running at this (or slightly higher) power already, and we probably want to know how long they will last! Next step 500mW if 400mW lasts "too long" (that would be the ideal outcome)....

I still want comments on my TESTING PROTOCOL! I want oppinions, ideas, correction / adjustment proposals, or does everyone like it the way it is?!?
