180mA for max life. 185mA for decent life. 190-200mA most have lived, but not all. Anything over than that and you are rolling the dice. It all depends on the diode. What will kill it faster than anything else is if its set on a kink. Check the dot on a wall. If its disfigured it might be set on a kink. If it is you have to dial it down a few clicks till you get a clean dot.
This is the cruncher that we try to get across to everyone. While the majority of diodes operate at a given RANGE or output power at a specific mA, it's impossible to determine the power of the laser without a power meter. You can expect to get in between 1mw and 1Gw. How's that sound?
Each diode has it's own properties and it will never be the same from diode to diode.
