Wow... looks really really good!!
Hmm... now I need to build a more professional set up instead of using a DMM.

I used a switch that is able to operate two seperate circuits in one click. One of which is used for the third 9V of the panel display and one circuit for the ophir head.

Normally these switches need a seperate cable connect to slide over the contact points. I did not have those so i grinded down the contact points to a smaller size to make it easier to solder them :tinfoil:

EDIT: In the picture you cant see there are another 2 contact points on the switch. Those are on the other side of the plastic cover.

BTW.. I assume you are using a Double Pole Switch.
I assume the 2nd pole is cutting a single line to the OPHIR
head..


Which wire or wires are you cutting with the switch on the
OPHIR head ??

I cut the positive wire of 9v for the display. And i cut the positive wire of the 18V supply for the ophir with this switch. I am not a hero in how this switch is called so thanks for jumping in everybody :D

EDIT: i am thinking of putting in a logging option with an arduino + addon. However i wil have to cut out an extra USB port for it.

What do you guys think?

The 18 volt supply that goes to the OPHIR head has
three (3) wires...

1) +9 Volts
2) Ground
3) -9 Volts

You need to cut the +9V AND the -9V or one of the
batteries will discharge into the head.

yup, sure you can do that. Be careful as the arduino may need additional adjustments to report the correct amount of voltage depending on weather or not you are using a wall xmfr or batteries.

What if you unplug the head from the lpm when not in use, like I do?

I wouldn't suggest pulling the 4 wire connector from the
OPHIR head and re-connecting it under power for 2 reasons.

1) it may introduce spikes into the Head electronics and
possibly damage it.
2) The connectors used are known to become defective if
manhandled with wires breaking off the crimped connectors.

Also, try these. They have integrated data logging.
DC meter, DC voltage meters, DC current meters

Looking at the price list I find the price a bit High
for just a Digital Panel Meter...

$ 60.00 RS232 or USB output
$ ??.?? Shipping/Handling
$320.00 Without S/H costs

That's only for a DPM and no LPM.
You could buy a decent calibrated LPM with Data logging and
probably shipping included for that price...

Can't agree more with Jerry on this one!! Voltage Spikes to a delicate instrument like this could fry it or damage it.
Also the connectors aren't meant to connect and disconnect like a USB connector. They're very delicate.

Well Jerry has a point , as always!! Thanks for sharing such details it will definitely help in the handling of components for me..

I think a simple Video from a camera phone is much more entertaining than a arduino datalogging graph, when it comes to the quick response ophirs.. But thats just my opinion.. Offcourse people may have a practical use of the graphs, its still there..

Anyways, Good thread, Cant wait to get mine :wave:

Ok i see jerry. So for this to work flawles i would need a triple pole switch right? I need one more pole. What would you recommend me to do jerry? Buy another switch and also wire the -9V to it? Or is it possible to re-wire it?

You can either use the DPDT switch that you have right now
for the 2 Poles required for the OPHIR split supply and
get a SPDT toggle switch for the Display like these SPDT
Toggle switches...

OR

You can get a 3PDT toggle switch and handle the OPHIR head
and Display at the same time. A 3PDT toggle switch like this...

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I ment when the power is off and I'm done metering a laser and I unplug my ophir from the rest of the meter itself. That's why I used a USB cable to make it a pimple plug in.
