It is our new laser! You can watch it on youtube. The title is
80mw portable blue laser. I am not allowed to post link :( Please search for it. The laser peaks more than 100mw! ;D
 





Wow!!!! that is the strongest portable 473nm laser I have ever seen/heard of. The price tag on that baby must be huge! I would put up at least $900 for it.

Interesting spec: Residual IR (1064&808nm) <0.01%

That sounds nicely filtered, though how a blue dpss laser could produce 1064 is somewhat beyond me - copied specs from a green?
 
Doesn't a blue change one crystal only? Replace the KTP with a Bibo? If that's the case it would still generate 1064.
 
uh, not quite. Nd:YVO[sub]4[/sub] actually lases on many lines (like argon or krypton etc.) some have more gain than others. 1064 has the highest gain. 946 is a minor line of Nd:YVO[sub]4[/sub] which is why blues come in far less power.

Getting additional lasing lines out of YVO4 requires some engineering. The goal is to pump the system with the appropriate pump energy to get the electrons into the proper inversion level to release their energy along the required lasing line. You do things like walk off 1064 to keep it from oscillating and drive the YVO very heavy to get it lase at 946nm. Then you apply the SHG component and viola, 473nm but to generate 473nm or 457nm requires heavy pumping from large pump diodes. Any perceived efficiency pretty much goes out the window.
 
^How well does YAG work for blue, Frothy? I've always been curious about that and I'm sure if anybody here could answer, it would be you. I've always been under the impression that YVO[sub]4[/sub] and YAG have the same (or at least very similar) lasing lines, since it's the Nd that is the active gain medium. Is there any chance that YAG will lase at 946nm any better (easier or more efficiently) than YVO[sub]4[/sub]?
 
YAG is not as efficient (very relative term here). The absorption range of YAG is much narrower than YVO4. You can get it to lase at 946nm but the nature of YAG leaves you with unpolarized light. Not really an issue for pointers but for scientific applications it's nice to have well polarized light which YVO4 excels at.
 
yea a price would be nice I'm buying a 473 here in a week or so either from Jack at opto or any other reasonable offers i have it down to three so far :-?
 
^If you're looking for a pen-style 473nm, the CNI groupbuy in the groupbuy section is about done, $345 for the 2-5mW pen-style, just like the LaserGlow Aquarius. I see from the thread linked below that you've already seen the RPL.

This one here is intruiging as well.  I've seen a 473nm posted somewhere on this forum in the 70mW range from Optotronics, someone should try and find it again.  Would be nice to know how much this is going to cost.

It's an Optotronics "RPL-70" blue, averages 72mW.  This looks similar, so I'll reiterate that it would be nice to know how much this one will cost.
