the laser is heating the ink boiling it,this causes it to make a whistleing sound in the glass there is no temp change at all. In the video the cam picks it up as a cracking sound but in real life it is a very unique sound! Very odd :) enjoy!

the sound is caused from high speed boiling at the point of the laser and ONLY the laser. The entire bottle will boil but it will take a little bit longer to do. If you actually look at the spot you can see it vibrating. That's the liquid as it vibrates.

Ahh, thanks Ken! :thanks:

Very cool it boils because it's black, try it with white ink and see what happens ;)

I tried this with a bottle of bright red paint this morning, it crackles too!!!

For those of you that don't have bottles of dark ink, I recommend submerging a small dark pebble in water and focusing on that. The noise is very similar.

I did this to an inkpen once and it too makes crackling popping noises. Same thing if you put a black piece of plastic in water, and lase it through the side of the glass, it makes cracking noises.

I tried burning black electrical tape under water... it sizzled, but it left some ugly brown colored bubbles on the surface of the tape...

Will this produce similar effects in, say, beakers of dark soda or something similar?

How powerful does the laser have to be and is it only the 405/445 side or could say a 200mW 660nm do the job?

You wanna have some real fun? (posted this ages ago) point a focussed, powerful laser into a bottle of soy sauce... ;)
