3w laser video gone viral CNN News

It slightly concerns me that the CNN reporters have stated that

"... a real life lightsaber. Every boy in America wants one of these things."

I'm well aware that SP has always emphasized safety, but I'm afraid that CNN has not shown his emphasis on safety as much as we would have liked them to.

It's also unfortunate that the first site that comes up when someone searches "laser lightsaber" is "Spyder 3 Powered LaserSaber | Wicked Lasers."

I truly wish that CNN had given more attention to safety.

This going on CNN is not the kind of publicity lasers need :(

I am with Ryan about CNN. they reported it like hey there is a new toy kids will ask want that can do ask this damage. The fact that they said kids bothers me because they are not toys and they definitely give that impression.

Worse, we need a representative of the laser community to make a move.

By how the government these days think banning items would automatically solve a problem.
This can take a turn for the ABSOLUTE WORST OF THE WORST.:banghead:

CNN is considering bringing me on some new show of theirs for my laser videos. If I make it, you can guarantee that I'll make sure they know that lasers aren't toys and that laser goggles need to be worn at all times. I want to preserve the laser hobby just as much as all of you and this would be my chance to give us all a good impression.

That would be fantastic! I can't believe that news guy was sitting there laughing saying "well all the kids are going to want this"

Safety is important, but please dont go overboard and compare it to firearms eh?
Make this hobby sound educational to the masses , compare it with Radios for instance.
Thats gonna be good :D

I actually tell everyone who buys a high power laser from me that you need to treat it like a firearm. Also consider you batteries as bullets.... You don't just leave a loaded weapon sitting around.

I would definitely have a talk with some senior members about what to say and not say before you go on. You are representing the laser community not just yourself so no pressure lol

I just got interviewed by my local news station. I pushed safety several times in the interview and told them that I built the 3W laser...which really isn't a lie because I have torn it open and put it back together trying to figure out why it keeps shutting off randomly. I was not going to tell them that anyone can just buy a completed one off the internet or this forum...I hate to stretch the truth but I felt it was the right thing to do. There's also legal issues regarding selling high powered handheld lasers that I didn't want to bring the forum into.

BTW, I haven't heard anything back from CNN.

You guys overreact something fierce. This publicity wont change our accessibility to the hobby (even if it turns for the worse), and that is the only thing I honesty care about.

That's probably because you live in Sweden..
I doubt US Laws and regulations would affect
you directly...

Don't worry styro, you're doing a great job pushing safety :). This might be a good chance to give us laser enthusiasts a good name, other than the bad stuff like bringing down planes.
