12x BR DIODES

Wow guys, I just stumble across this video. Looks to be a 12X that's pushing out over a Watt. That must be a burning beast!

How much do you want to bet he is pulling the switch diode trick.

I dont understand why you would even post that trash on here from a banned member. Louis is a piece of chit. I have no doubt he is faking the whole thing.

Next thing I'll be seeing Tyler and his lasers.

Thumbs down.

I won´t trust "Arenared" and his kenometer setup

Remember these diodes can be pushed very high. They just don't last very long.

It would be akin to driving my old truck as fast as it will go. I might get the old girl up to 150MPH, but for how long will the engine hold together?

I had a PHR run at 330mW for 7 minutes. I had an SF-AD115 (low powered "reader") run at >200mW for 60 hours (continuous test) once.

Peace,
dave

I'd like to see him use it for 2 minutes usage on that setting, if the vid isn't faked. It would be toast.

To the earlier mention of higher powers not netting real world benefit, I somewhat agree. I held my 885mW 12X next to another identical 500mW 12X I built, both aimed at the sky. It was very hard to distinguish a visible beam difference. Now when the dots hit a white reflective sign, that story changes. Or when the dot so happens to land on your skin. :D

Of course, there was no way to measure wavelength. So the 500mW could have had a higher wavelength for all I know. I tried doing reflective tests to distinguish any color difference, I could not sort out any noticeable difference. But we all know the human eyes aren't a useful wavelength meter.

I remember when I had 4 600-650mW 12X lasers. They were all pretty much the same power yet they all appeared to be of different powers. One was way brighter than the others and one was way more dim than the others while the other 2 were right in the middle together. When Holding the two opposites next to eachother it looked as though one was twice as bright as the other but the meter had them right around the exact same power. I am sure there are others here who can tell similar stories. Getting a longer wavelength diode is just as if not more important than getting a Very powerful one. Now if you can find a high wavelength diode and power it up to 800mW then you will really have something special. I would really love to get my hands on a spectrometer.

In my experience with PHR's, the longer wavelength is more noticeable when not pushed!

I don't know if anybody else has ever noticed this, but it seems like if you keep it at 100mW's or so, you will get more 'long wavelength' builds! :)

This is one reason that I don't see a need to push my 12X diodes. Of course, the main reason is that I want them set for longevity...

These diodes blue shift with increasing current density, resulting in lower wavelength emission as you increase drive current. Congratulations, you deduced one of the big issues still being researched constantly with semiconductor light emitters, especially these violet laser diodes that are being grown on c-plane polar GaN and need very high current density.

Going to non-polar or semi-polar will reduce this current-induced blue shift, but this is still a ways from production, and may actually never happen for violet lasers, while it's much for likely for blue and almost guaranteed for green lasers.

Great to hear that coming from you!

I knew it wasn't just coincidence... (happens too often)

I pushed a 12X over a watt 7 times for under 10 seconds about a month ago and I posted the sad results.

Good Luck -- Fun while it lasts. What current is he running?

IIRC when Arenared was here under one of his other names and posted about this laser, he said he was running it at 600mA

Peace,

P.S. yobresal is sending me his 800mW 12X build so I can check out how awesome it is...

It will be interesting to put it side by side with my 480mW 12X build in the dark to compare the beam visibility.

I'll let you know how the comparison goes...

FYI folks - Found a BDR-205 internal drive for a good price at Newegg. They have a $20 off promotion going through 4/25 so I got one for $181 shipped!

I just found the posting again. I did not remember correctly. He says he was running it at 800mA

I don´t know enough about this 12x br diodes but is this setting possible?
