oh well. has to happen some time...

it won't affect anything though as i don't think any of the laser sellers here report their laser sales to the irs.

i also doubt they are going to charge 200k for a projector based on the 24 diode's capable output.

This seems purely BS, a tax by mW is just absurd, what do they tax? peak power? avg power? If anything, I could see a laser tax and licensing system similar to what is currently used for firearms accesories i.e. silencers where you have to pay for a $200 tax stamp and apply for a class II license, making them still legal to own and use but only for the determined and financially capable. I could see this kind of thing for class IV handhelds sold in the US as class IV handhelds, but I agree with the above that a system like this could easily be circumnavigated by imports, making it effectively useless for those in the know. Re: READ AND HEED--this will effect all.

To be fair, this 'tax' should apply to the display folks as well After all they use visible lasers in public as well.. If it was I bet you'd see their stance on stuff like this do a complete 180..

But honestly it'll never happen. The costs to enforce it would exceed any revenue they would collect, plus enforcement would be next to impossible anyway.

If anything we'll see flat out bans start popping up. Though in all honesty I hope those apply to the 'nice' display folks who put forth ideas such as these as well.. IMHO most of those guys need to be taken down a peg or two anyway. You seriously don't ever see 'pointer' hobbyists actively trying to kick the 'display' guys after all.

And this is coming from a guy who has a whole lot more interest in display than I do pointers.. I just can't ever really stomach the general mentality of the 'pro's' over on PL for very long before I start wishing I could punch more than a few of them in the face.

Lol. That's why I don't have many posts over there. Everyone is way too quick to flame you.

I dont think this will be enforceable. Because right now the chinese sell lasers of which they have NO idea the output power. In fact the lasers they sell are already illegal so the only thing I see changing is that all their lasers will suddenly change to 1mW rating overnight. Reputable dealers such as CNI etc will be the ones getting shafted which is really too bad since 99% of these idiots can already not afford the quality companies who will have to report true output. It will take out the companies who are legit and force even enthusiasts to buy from the cheapo Chinese sites that will underrate them.

Another flaw in this I just thought about with this is that this is a tax.. and the government.. they're talking about. If a 'laser tax' does get put in place.. You can probably guarantee our money starved government would make it as 'all encompassing' as they could.. Meaning every type of laser they could get away with including would be included in it.. Meaning our 'friends' over on PL would most likely end up just as affected by it as we were.

I know the PL 'pros' hate pointers, but there are better solutions to this problem than just trying to wipe anything over 5mw out of existence. Namely licensing and draconian punishments against misuse of lasers.

Re: READ AND HEED--this will effect all.

Well in the event that this does pass I might as well reveal a perfect work around for this law.

China and CNI are you listening?

Put an internal shutter or filter over the lens that reduces the output to a few mW or even blocks it completely. Viola a non taxable laser pointer. It doesnt put out any mW as is and CNI cannot be responsible for any modifications that take place out of their hands.

If they enforce taxing of anything with internal lasers all hell will break loose. Good by laserscopes and other medical equipment so that wont happen. Problem solved.

*this is just an illustration of how this tax idea will never work*

Re: READ AND HEED--this will effect all.

Sorry for the rant, but ..... how is that governments can try to solve idiotic problems only with more idiotic solutions ?

Does a tax magically heal the mental disorders of all the idiots that have fun pointing lasers at cars, airplanes and eyes of other peoples ?

It's the same in all the countries, perhaps ..... bah.

EDIT: and i also seriously think that the linked article must be saved somewhere and permanently indexed as "Perfect Example of Stupidity and Lack of Common Sense", as future memory and for the posterity :p (and no, i'm not kidding, this time :p)

And also ..... "Laser Safety Tax on handheld lasers with visible light output" ..... yeah, right, so you can tax my 5mW green keychain pointer, and at the same time i'm free to go around blinding peoples with my 2W IR handheld unit, right ? ..... *shakes head and left them fall in the garbage pit* :p

This is not a government proposal. This is a proposal by a private individual and/or a special interest group.

Also, how would this be enforceable ? They can barely collect sales tax on Internet purchases items now.

Exactly.

I don't see anything like this ever getting passed, this article is just some proposition to nobody in particular on laser control, a seriously biased opinion to top it all off.

The government can't even keep china from getting lasers that are technically illegal into the states as it is, how are they going to enforce this tax? The Chinese will keep selling as they do now, shipping with a declaration as something like a flashlight or pen.

I don't really see any reason to get all upset about this. That is until customs can actually do their job...

Its scare tactics. The government would have to sell lasers. Thats the only way to collect. So the argument BS.

Calm down Len, its nothing to worry about. Please post facts because threads like this just furthers the paranoia. No matter what, unless they change the technology, you will always have lasers.

The government is not selling Cigarettes or Gasoline....
and they still gouge their taxes right out of the consumer's
pockets...

To implement this Laser Tax it would take many...many
years if they would do it at all... IMO

Either way... I'm not worried....
