Ads on the forum?

My browser have recently started using something like 100% of the processor when viewing LPF.
It mean an incredible lag.
Have there been any changes to the ads within the last 12-24 hours?

I am running Firefox on an Ubuntu laptop. ETA: Setting NoScript to ban the Laserglow banner solved the problem.

Hi Toke,
Are you using the default HOSTS file?
If so, go here and follow the instructions.
Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File
This will prevent lots of crap ads and such from loading.
Alot of the delay is from the google syndication stuff as it won't load the page until it calls home to google, puts cookies on you computer and begins tracking your browsing history.

Also, turn off 3rd party cookies on your browser.
If these don't fix the problem, disable the flashplayer and see if that fixes it.

When you use the HOSTS file from the site above, you will notice alot less ads on all the sites you visit.
If it happens that one of your sites won't load with the hosts file, you can edit out any of the domains you really need.

I have no idea what a HOSTS file is, but have just turned off and deleted all cookies. The NoScript for firefox seems quite effective when set up right.

please remember that ads make it possible to pay for costs associated with the forum. if u want to block u can (its ur choice obviously) but if everyone did this lpf would not be possible

You mean your income would not be possible. The donations covers LPF not the ads. Am I wrong?

I am aware of it, but the lag that developed with the processor made it more or less impossible for me to browse the forum. ETA: It is the laserglow banner, allowing it get my fan and processor to freak out again. Now I just have to figure out where my pagebreaks have gone.

Hi Avery, I agree with you, the ads on your site is what makes this forum possible.
The only ads I block are those using flash because of the bad security issues of flash, it is hacked all the time and though good for advertisers because they can put "flash cookies" on your computer to trace your travels from website to website as well as now use your computer as a P2P host for their advertisements using the computer owners upload bandwidth, not to mention the security nightmare associated with flash.

I also block google analytics as hey have no business tracking my surfing behaviors as well, plus the fact if google anaytics server are slow it makes the LPF load veryt slowly as well.

All normal banners using jeg, or animated gifs load normally.
As far as I can tell when I load the main LPF page there are only two flash banner ads at the top that do not load, the CNI banner, gadgettown and others load normally.

@cj yes u are right donations cover the price of hosting. purely speculating, if people kept donating the hosting cost each month, and all banner/text ads made 0 dollars, i would need to create a membership fee (this is only speculating though and i see no reason this would ever happen, b/c the site is doing extremely well and keeps doing better and better)

it is my goal though to make a profit obviously (i think any business owner would have this goal). and it is my #1 goal to make sure the site is always neutral, laid back, and easy to use, and fast [contacting laserglow about the banner potentially causing lag]

the site takes a lot of time and effort to maintain so for the time committment i put in it feels good to make money from it, its like a part-time job. time is money and i have a lot on my plate,fulltime job,school,IT training, maintaining the site.

i did notice just now laserglow did put a new ad (i didnt do the change on my end, the source code points to a file on their server which they can change).

is anyone else noticing lag from the new laserglow ad?

im contacting laserglow now to let them know about this. i can't repro. the issue from here in 3 browsers but im emailing them now regardless

@jack i 100% percent understand regarding flash ads, adobe is littered with vulnerabilities and i often use flashblock in firefox.

the main thing that would hurt is if users blocked payperclick ads. i can understand 100% if ppl want to block adobe flash stuff lol. security comes first for me (i work in that field lol).

and jack sry i had to edit the last line of ur post b/c it could violate the payperclick ad provider terms

I could be the only one with severe problems? My laptop does not agree with the videos on cracked.com either.
It is likely something about nvidea not making drivers for linux that support older graphics cards.

I am getting the balance in blocking right now I think.
