whats up i am making building a laser a summer project, i got a 16x dvd burner and an aixiz module that is taking forever to come to my house.

I also made this account to ask someone or one of the experts this question:

How does a 100mw -200mw laser react when shined through a 1/4 inch or less thickness of clear glass. will it burn stuff on the other side or does the glass deflect the lasers? can you create a focal point on the other side of the glass?

Howdy and welcome to the forum  the glass will change the path slightly and will for sure reduce the power, but you will still be able to focus it on the other side of the glass. as for burning things on the other side that will depend on how powerfull you laser is !
Use the search button there is lots of answers there !
Have fun and be safe !

Welcome to the forum.
With the proper power, a glass of water will not noticeable affect the burning ability.
But, as Flaminpyro stated, it depends on the power of the laser, (and the opacity of the glass)
Check out this video I made of my red lab style laser, shining it through a beaker of water.
(water part starts at 1:52)

oh awesome thanks for all that information, wow, i was planning on just a normal 16xdvd diode , thats about 100-200 mw right? you think its possible for me to be able to do that with such that power? thats a great vid greenmechanic , what power is that laser, it looks really powerful.

Shining lasers through some kinds of glass will make them project a bullseye pattern. I am not sure what the exact terminology for it is bit it has something to do with reflections off of the outer and inner faces of the glass, but it resembles a DPSS module modehopping. In any case, if the glass causes the laser to do that, then burning power will be affected slightly.

Greenm is using a 16x LCC(long closed can diode), and if you are planning to use a 16x, then you could have it around the same power as his, if you set it to the same current. However 510mA is a little high unless you have a big heatsink, like in a labbie(green's build)......

WELCOME--if this helps to understand-- a BR will pop a black balloon that is inside of a clear balloon-before it will pop the clear one.

Greenmechanic gave me a good idea, while Im so desperatly waiting to get my 445nm diode in, I decided to put an LCC in my chrome pckt mini, set the flex to 500mA and got 303mW after a 650nm G1!

oh cool kingdave your from maryland too, sweet man. as far as i know its almost been a week and my aixiz module hasnt arrived, well i guess its just from me choosing the free shipping option. yeah i plan on making this laser and maybe even a heat sink, but i really dont know what that is yet. all i know is that it makes something live longer.

You need to do alot more reading around here before actually trying to attempt the build, for saftey, and to make sure you dont fry your diode.
Read this first:http://laserpointerforums.com/f36/looking-build-laser-read-me-47684.html
A heatsink is exactly what it sounds like, it 'sinks' heat. You place your module inside a nice fitting heatsink, and the AL or CU metal heatsink takes the heat away from the module/diode. If your diode overheats it will blow, the bigger the heatsink, the longer you can keep the diode running at a safe temperature.

Thank for the praise, I'm working on 4 more He-Ne lamps, each with a completely different style. I think they are so cool!

If you are going to run your Ld at over 350mA, you must have a good heat-sink. Here is a pic. of the type in my labbie in the video.
I don't have a pic. of the actual one, but it is almost the same, only 2X as big. Note the fins and the fan, the cooler you can keep your LD, the longer life it will live

that really makes sense now, were could i find a small looking heat sink like in the picture.

also guys, im still waiting for my aixiz module to ship to my home, I ordered it on may26, using the free shipping and it still has yet to arrive( june 7th) the site says its still processing, is this normal for the free shipping.

AixiZ

theres the site i ordered it from its not a fraud site right?

*edit* im calling the number tomorrow while they are open to find this out, im tired of waiting i would have paid the shipping if i would of known it would be 2+ weeks for it to arrive.

Wow greenmechanic, you call THAT a lab style heatsink????:na: Lol!!!

You've got a nice LCC diode there green, I have mine at 500mA and am only getting 303mW, gets to 310mW in a normal heatsink.

I make all my own heat-sinks, but I am too busy at the moment, maybe if my work slows down, I'll start taking orders for custom made ones again.
Another member could make one for you. (Jayrob?)
