Here's a little something.



If you can amass a group of buyers you can have your own made and sell a bunch to pay for your project, become the middle men and maybe even profit, but I would wait until the process is refined enough to produce 50mw modules without stability issues, because right now everyone is buying 5mw pointers with stability issues for 130.00 each.

Nice find!

Sounds like Edmund optics does both, grinding and polishing single crystals and whole slabs that are cut after the fact.

Sadly not. At least that I am aware off.
Might be possible to do some sort of summing with red, however as that would be single pass, the efficiency would be so low that just a few uW would be possible.

Is there a crystal that can do that? I would dearly like to get one of those!

Hey, I did get the 532 nm diode. I haven't been able to test it yet - I want to machine a copper heatsink for it that doesn't require press-fitting the diode (so if I want to move it, I don't have to risk destroying it). I may get to it over the next weekend. Is there anything about it you're dying to know?

Also - on the topic of the "591" nm modules - I also have a couple on the way and I'm excited to see how they perform. I thought I would share them here but it turns out I wasn't the only one that knew about them.

I'm curious about the wavelength it produces, does to start out at 532nm and then red shift or does it start low and then red shift up to 532nm at its prescribed drive current. Also, I'm curious just how much it can actually output.

I've have way more spare diodes than modules so for testing them I press them in as normal then press them back out if they aren't what I wanted (I've done this many times when wavelength hunting). Even open can diodes like the Mitsu P73 have survived multiple presses without issue. For 5.6mm diodes I use a small section of a collapsible antenna and for 9mm diodes I use an airsoft barrel that I machined down. Both work the same way by reaching around the can and pressing on the base of the laser diode. The cut down airsoft barrel (with inner diameter opened up) has even extracted G-ball diodes no problem.

Although your method of a clamping heatsink would definitely make hot swapping diodes much faster

I removed the 593nm module from the little blue pen host and put it in one of my AA hosts. I'm happy that they're 12mm modules. I un-soldered the driver from the diode first and checked the output. The driver outputs about 337mA. There's a little trim-pot to adjust the output so I'm wondering how far it could be turned up before frying the diode and/or crystal(s). I also adjusted the input voltage and it had a steady output from around 2.5v up to 4.2v. I didn't try any higher than that but I do believe these are 5V drivers from what I've found online. I haven't figured out which 808nm diode it is yet but haven't really tried either. The optical output held pretty steady at 25mW.

Perhaps we should have a separate thread for these new modules/pointers???

Well I can tell you now that I won't be doing any destructive testing or even pushing the limits. I like to run LDs at or below their specification to get the best out of them (in terms of lifetime and color). I can put it through my diffraction grating spectrometer, however, and report the wavelength under normal operating parameters.
My real intention is to test out a compact beam correction and spatial filtering design. This LD is an ideal candidate - high brightness, really good power, and pretty good beam characteristics on paper. Most of my reporting will focus on how the laser responds to beam shaping.

On swapping diodes...
I've also been able to press diodes out of heatsinks with reasonable success. The problem is that every time two parts are pressed together and then apart, they deform a little. This makes both the heatsink (usually soft copper or brass) and the diode wear out over time. The deformation will make the interface between diode and heatsink in successive installations less efficient for moving heat and alignment will be affected. Maybe this effect is not important to most people but I'm trying to make the coolest, most over-engineered laser pointer I can.

Beware the datasheet calls for a 25+/-5C operating temperature range.

Thats what kept me away from these, I didn't want to fry it on accident. I instead went with one of these 395nm (measures 398nm @ 200mW) and it can operate up to 30C. Random stuff around the room fluoresces amazingly! I also can't see short wavelengths very well, 200mW of 398nm is a very faint grey spot to my eyes, I imagine a 380nm laser to me would just about be invisible.

Has anyone had their 425nm diode ship out yet, mines been sitting on "tracking number provided" for over a week now
