Some of you know I’ve had the worst of luck trying to build a Red WL pen. I’ve killed a few open can diodes and even a couple drivers, regrettably. But, tonight it came together successfully :)
This is nothing new or special to most. Only to me:D. Here are some pics along the way and a couple beam shots. There’s just something about a laser pointer pen that emits BRIGHT Red...I like it:D
Materials: Leadlight host (Thank you, Lifetime17), FlexdriveV5 ~340mA, ML101U29 660nm LOC diode, copper modul, Acrylic lens.

very nice pen style build,i love reds, mistakes always happening but we are learning and getting better ;)

That's a sweet red pen, SGD, I really like those reds!
Glad to see that your luck held out and everything fell into place for this beauty. :yh:

Nice job, those leadlight hosts are nice, might have to try a build with one myself.

Great little red pen build, Josh. I have 5 of those diodes left in my stock. I think they are still as cheap as when I bought them at least five years ago. I am also fond of red lasers. Especially single mode ones with nice tight beams.

Hi SGD,
Nice you made it through the gauntlet wish flying colors. Great job looking good buddy Enjoy..

Rich:)

Excellent EDC, congratulations on getting over the finish line. Puts such a smile on the face and a joy in the heart, when the plan finally comes together. (been there a few times myself) Congrats again. :gj:

Thx, Chris!! I hope I’ve cashed out my silly errors for a while.

Thx, Jeff! Of all the crazy color lasers these days, the Red spec of WLs are still my favorite:beer:

You must have one...or 5  laser66.com, although a very antiquated website, still does sell these hosts.

I couldn’t agree more, Paul!! Tight SM reds are awesome. These diodes are very cheap. I bought 5 for around $12. These seem to be similar to the LPC-826.

Thanks a ton Rich!! This one made a great addition to the Pen chronical:D. Next I’m building one with a PHR805T 405nm diode.

Great! Glad you got it, nice pics :)
Thx Alaskan. This pen makes 3. Soon I’ll start a 405nm pen. I’m going to have to craft switch board mount as I broke one. That’ll be easy enough.

Thx, Bob!! I think that when I build up my last two Leadlight hosts I’ll make a post of all 5 at once. Leadlight s sure are nice hosts.

Thanks for checking it out guys and furthering my building inspiration. It’s only from you all I’ve learned so much...thank you!!

Happy Memorial Day!!

Kudos on a job well done! Wasn't aware of this retailer for the host - appreciate the suggestion!
:gj: Love the beams!

The LPCs are 650nm and these ML101U29s are supposed to be 660nm. But, I haven't measured the wavelength to be certain of the specs. Both are a deep red color and not as bright mW for mW as the 638nm are.

Yeah you’re right. I’ve seen em advertised both as 650/660 interchangably, and I’ve always wondered why that is. I guess we would have to measure them at different currents, huh? This definitely is a deeper red compared to 638. It’s a little darker than my GGW Red diode, from what I can see. These diodes are so cheap. I’d like to see more builds with them.

:gj: I like the tight red beams too. :D
They sure are pretty:D

Thx, Lew! Yeah when you buy one you have to add the PCB switch option. It’s just an unpopulated driver solely for a momentary switch:). Can’t wait to see yours soon.
