I looked this up for my location especially. I won't be in the 100% total eclipse, but will be in the 90% which I can live with. It has barely rained here in the past couple of months. I just hope it is sunny with no clouds that morning. 90% should occur at 10:14 A.M.

It's been consistently cloudy here for the last month, so I'm driving if the clouds are here in the early morning. Looks like my filter and glasses aren't going to make it though. Probably going to get some clean welding filters.

Good luck to you, Rivem. I know this is one you don't want to miss. The one I saw in Colorado back in the early 1990s was less than 50%, so not that much of a mind blowing experience. I'm looking forward to this one.

So years ago I bought an eBay lot of old laser goggles for like $80 or something for 7-8 different goggles. One of the goggles in the set was this odd, very dark one with really high ODs that I had no idea what I'd ever use it for:

Well it appears to be the perfect pair of goggles for viewing this eclipse!

Check out these OD ratings:

I've never seen OD 30 or OD 20. I'd almost expect the plastic to melt before it'd ever get powerful enough to get through that. Maybe it's for pulsed lasers. It does knock out the infrared and UV nicely. I don't expect there are gaps in the range either.

The wavelength where the OD rating does shine though is OD 6 which is a magnitude greater than the suggested OD 5 we're supposed to have.

I shined a really bright flashlight directly through the goggles to my eyes and all I could see was this dim square where the LED was located. I think I'm good to go with these!

Hi Jerry ,
That solar viewing box reminds me of the unknown comic on the gong show years ago. With JP morgan and chuck berris.

I hope those google do work safely for viewing the sun. I shined a bright light into my solar eclipse googles and only saw the faintest hint of a spot there. Using your eyes to test this theory is pretty ballsy. I hope it woks out well for you.

Andrew, who produced that crap YouTube video? it is the only kind of junk crap that a totally ignorant individual would give credence to.

Yeah I remember the Gong Show... I wouldn't miss
it when it was on. The unknown comic cracked me
up and those ridiculous acts. Loved the big hook
to get them off the stage... Ahhh the good old days...

Hey Jerry, that map you linked to reminds me of a YouTube clip that was in my feed recently.
Want a good laugh.... ok, get your popcorn and watch ....:pop:

That video is quite funny and entertaining...
Looks like the "experts" have no clue but are
still trying to convince you they know what
they're talking about...
Hmmm... reminds me of a Forum member...

Jerry
Side note. Watch the movie " Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" and YT "Gong Show popsicle twins"
That act aired on the east coast but not the west coast.

I've done it that way before. This time I bought three pairs of glasses for $6.50. Supposed to get here by the 18th. That's cutting it close, but they are coming from New York, so plenty of time to get here. I'll be more than pissed if they get here late. $3.50 of that was shipping.

I waited way too long to order my glasses and filters, so it's going to be close for me as well. Hopefully the solar filter for my scope will make it though. I'm probably only going to see the partial at this point since a road trip is looking questionable.

Don't worry if they don't arrive in time because there's another eclipse happening here in 2024. Lucky folks living in the city of Cape Girardeau are in the path both times.

I'll definitely do some more testing, notably because the light I could see was greenish, which is not noted in the filter spec.
