WARNING! The two 16340 batteries you see in this photo are not the correct batteries for laser shown in photo! The correct battery is the 18650!

So begins the review!
Once again i am surfing the China market place on the net, i see this 532nm green Gatling for sale at $18.45. I do not have a green Gatling as of yet, i also see once again, it is shipped out of the United States. ( NICE! NO CUSTOMS! )

Anyhow, i do a quick scan of the reviews on this, and see a ton of reviews saying all their units are bad upon receipt! I then do a quick scan of the specs on the page and notice this 532nm Gatling requires one 3.7v 18650 battery to function. However, they are shipping the 532nm Gatling with two 3.7v 16340's!!!!:banghead::banghead::banghead:

CAN YOU SEE THE PROBLEM HERE?

So! Now i need to order the damn thing just to see if my suspicions are correct! And they were! LOL :)

So, all these poor folks are stuffing two 3.7 batteries in their units and TOASTING them!!!:crackup::crackup:

The first thing i did upon receipt, was to put my own 18650 battery in it, and the thing works great! I do not own a LPM as of yet, but my guess would be about 200mw on this unit . The focusing ring works wonderful and the host body on this is machined out of one piece of aluminium, except for the focus ring and the rear switch-butt cap and side tubes!

Don't believe my story?? Here is the link to the web page where i got it! For a good chuckle, check it out!! LINK: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Hig...32702045785.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.0.6pizTv

Over all, another great low cost unit!

Ha, yep, that's pretty embarrassing. Had no idea Aliexpress ships from the USA, too bad there's nothing in Canada! (as to be expected)

Impressive catch. That's doing the work. Looking forward to your review. For under $20.00, that's not bad at all. :gj:

I do not like this host design - I see it as ugly. However without the tubes, it is a different cup of tea - quite nice and futuristic. For that price it is incredible.

Still I think you should post it in fail thread instead. :D

I've always thought the design was uber cool looking, have wanted one for a long time but not enough to spend the money, it seems. I've put two 16340 batteries in a small 50 mw green laser pointer which should have had a single 18650 battery and it ran without failure, appears the driver was designed to take twice the voltage. Don't know if this one was designed to take double the voltage, but maybe it can?

Hmm... Still I'm not sure, if such a cheap laser would be designed that complex. It is maybe just as you say, Alaskan.

UPDATE ON THE GREEN GATLING: After playing with it a while, my guess would be about 100mw on this unit! I need to get a LPM!!!!

NIce buy/great deal for $18.45 including shipping from within USA.

The earlier original 2010 version with the shorter 2 piece body tube took 1 X 16340 and was either 50mW or 100mW 532nm .
They were sold by O-like @ $96.99 + shipping and a 2 to 4 weeks wait at the time.
The 100mW fully waterproof model came in a low cost but nice foam filled w cutout fot the laser and 1 16340 battery tin metal box > The box was like cookie or cracker tin box quality and was finished in a matte silver finish---so the one you found @ 18.45 for a 100mW is crazy low almost "give away" price.

See thread from 2010 here: http://laserpointerforums.com/f45/gatling-laser-47901.html

Here is a review from 2010 of it : http://laserpointerforums.com/f52/gatlin-100mw-green-laser-o-like-review-49272.html

No case came with this one, but at $ 18.45 and every thing in photo, it was a steal! Its interesting that the Gatling has morphed and changed over time. Makes me wonder why they put so much time into it? Perhaps cost savings?

DPSS laser pointers don't require 2 X 3.7 VDC because the 808nm laser diode they are using only need about 2 volts, but that doesn't mean the driver can't take the voltage of two batteries without failing, if designed to do so.

Well, my 532 nm Sky Lasers is powered by two 16340 in series. ;)

Well, my 532 nm Sky Lasers is powered by two 16340 in series. ;)

That is a surprise.
For a ~2V forward voltage of IR, using 8.4V of battery will need a carefully designed driver IMO, 6.4 drops of voltage will generate much heat with some ACC buck driver

wth??? Are you referring to the OP?

Of course not!! :D
its for the aliexpress review on their site and aliexpress seller!

What i'm trying to say was, every seller in aliexpress need to do some research before just sending those 2x16340 which they thought was a real power source of those laser.

of course when the buyer is not informed either, there would be loss on both side e.g the seller lost the goods/money if the buyer returned a broke laser, even with refund, buyer will lost its time.
in addition, the buyer might completely trust that the battery comes with laser is its real power source which is 100% compatible, that's just sad :(
