You know most use 1 big red LED and a bank of the blues that shine through a spinning phosphor wheel with one clear gap for blue to go through.

Yep seems they mostly use blue lasers and a phosphor wheel to make green light. Green light must be the main reason for useing lasers. Some have red and blue LED's and only green is made from the blue lasers. Some use just a red LED and let the laser make blue and green light, some are laser only to make blue, red and green light but none I have seen use a green LED and lasers to make the other colors.

Here is a new 5000 lumen projector I did a teardown over the weekend that uses four NUBM05 arrays to make all the light.

I could almost swear I have seen a couple of all LED projectors for sale.

But what you say makes perfect sense, because energy efficiency is a big driving force behind much of the design and even the green LD's such as the 520's are at best half as efficient as blues, I wonder what the conversion efficiency of the phosphor is and if blue LD's are going to disappear all together when high efficiency green LED's are perfected....hmm

Very interesting, I like seeing the inner workings, and it takes a lot of high quality glass to manipulate the light, that's why I cant help but think lasers could be used for direct projection, even if just a RGB focused onto the DLP chip the throw and downstream optical train would be easier and produce a better image and efficiency would be much better without as much power robbing glass in between.

EDIT: I just caught that last line, ALL THE LIGHT, do you mean even the red too?
And WOW look at the radiators on that beast, that thing has to move a lot of heat, is one for the diode bank heat and one for the DLP chip heat?

Oh yea there are lots of all LED projectors out there. They are a longer life alternative to lamp based projectors but I was just referring to projectors with lasers in them either laser/LED hybrid or just laser.

Do you ever actually try and use a projector for movies or just tear them down? I've had a projector since before Finding Nemo was released on my main basement back in 2002.
Are the projectors you are buying business or theater type?

Apparently it's not just the efficiency of green led that's the reason, it's the longevity/MTTF, please read the link below.

When green led matches blue longevity/MTTF we may not see any new laser projectors until holographic tv becomes the new must have. Less power is needed in green for us to see and even if efficiency stays at half the conversion losses will make up for that.

Get them now while times are good !

Wow that's a pretty serious projector. I'd like to have that just for watching movies on. But I would be tempted to dismantle it. Thanks for sharing that!

Wow that's a pretty serious projector. I'd like to have that just for watching movies on. But I would be tempted to dismantle it. Thanks for sharing that!

Oh yea put it back together after I assessed what was in it and been using it the past few days to watch TV in my workshop. It is really bright for a projector.:beer:

He might just put it back together and watch movies on it, because some of these are not profitable, but you never know what's inside until you look.

That's part of the research cost that has to be recovered, the reason information paid for is not given away, but when someone gambles and finds the new 12 watt diodes then it's a pay day, too bad this was just 32 of the 05's that still have to be harvested.

I would like to buy a block, but if he had to pay what I'm afraid he did for the unit then he has to piece it out just to try and break even.

The big question is will the coming green gain medium refinements be used in greed LD's or LED's


EDIT: LOL, I was typing while he was, hehe.

So this is how a Chinese diode supplier is extracting there diodes. It is exactly what I suspected. A temp controlled scientific hot plate. You can't see it in the pic because I had to resize it. But the temp on the display reads 240 C. That's 464 Fahrenheit.

Sorry I looked at the pic before I even read it.
Do you have a pic of one of these running with the Gball in place?
They are made to be knife edged in the projectors I'm sure.
They should be correctable right out of the Gball, just pressed into a module skip the lens.
The perpendicular/parallel data sheet numbers look like they are near focused.

Yup thats it. I don't think I'm going to do it that way. I think heat extracted diodes are more prone to failure. But that's definitely way easier.

It can't be good for them, that's a hell of a lot hotter than they ever get running.

Slightly off topic.
Have you used any of the nubm07e diodes, the color is amazing.

Its a 5000 dollar projector with 32 diodes, how many do you want LOL.

I want one of these: PLPM4 450 datasheet - For the first time there is a compact laser multi-chip

That Osram 20 die monster is 1 x 1.25 inches, I want that.
I have a tec pad bonded to a big finned sink just waiting.
165watts in 50 watts out at factory spec, so we have to dissipate 115 watts at factory spec.
That's not impossible, but pocket sized builds will have a very short duty cycle and a heavy copper reservoir.
