Good review and nice laser dude! I have a very similar host that takes one 18650 with a 50mW 520nm diode in it. Going to do a 1W+ build this summer, but I'm considering building it in a pen style host.

Welcome to the 1W+ club of beautiful 520nm;) Beautiful host to put it in too.
I'm wondering by your comment if you are saying that all of Ehgs side button hosts are momentary? Of course he can answer that himself;) +REP

All of my side switch hosts have been momentary because it's hard to find a latching switch that is short enough to go into the side of a host.
I did find a few and I will be trying them very soon, they are short enough but they might be to big in diameter, we will see.

Thanks Pman appreciate the rep!

Great review. Thanks again.

You're welcome

Damn I wanted that host!Great work!I feel those damn spendy direct diodes will be the death of me. I just blew my 520b. 85$ diode! and I want MORE!! The 520nm can be very bright with no IR which is awesome. Good luck with it. I'm pretty sure mine died from voltage input fluctuations! but without a proper autopsy IDK!
PEW PEW.
edit: I love the size comparison. I usually use mono bottle!

Yep this is a large host with a powerful diode to boot... Sorry to hear about your mishap, you should replace it with one of these :)

Thanks! Good luck with your build...all I would say is keep a careful eye on heat build up with a narrow pen style host...these units put out a fair amount of heat, so much so I transplanted this module from a smaller 1 x 18650 host to the unit you see in the review.

Yeah it's going to get pretty hot in there. It's just that I'd love to have a host similar to the frequently seen ebay pointers, but with a 1W+ diode in it :D
Definitely not something anyone would expect from a simple pointer haha.

Yes that would be pretty spectacular! I used to own a chrome leadlight host years ago and it would be great to source one for a custom build :)

Yes, it warms very quick. Don't know what kind of output you are going to get even with the best 10440s. Expect a short amount of bang time. Buy a couple pairs of the best cells you can find.
Strongest pen I have is a 445nm that I believe hits over 1.2W (know it's over 1W for sure and focusable). Have to agree that it's a nasty unit but it's easy to get that kind of brightness with a 532nm pen with little expense. Always liked the wow factor you get with an over spec 532nm. You could claim it cost whatever you want to someone who has never seen one before for a bit of fun;)

Forgive posting to a thread this old, but I have a question, have you tried swapping the G2 lens out to a three element lens and made divergence calculations? I am very interested in your findings, if you have done so.

I finally purchased a 520nm 1 watt laser diode and put it in this huge host Ehgemus built for me too, it has a 50mm/2 inch diameter PCX lens in an expander setup so the divergence is low enough to put a spot on clouds. Although, you can't see well in this photo I have a lot more of them at this link to look at from tonight:

wow. those are some awesome beam shots. That host suites the beam very well.

Alaskan woah that beam is massive! Love how it can tag clouds so well. Great looking build.
