So, any of you that bother watching the news may be aware of the recent Australian federal election.

Long story short, it didn't go so great.

For a few years now, the previous government started a project called the NBN, which is basically a program to upgrade Australia's internet backbone, by supplying fiber connections to homes. At this stage only a small portion of the country has access to it, everyone else uses either ADSL or even dialup.

We pay insane costs for internet, and in some places the quality of the copper lines is crap, and degrading fast.

However, the newly elected government isn't so fond of this, and is basically planning to scrap the project, and continue using the outdated, and soon to fail entirely copper system.

So, if you have a few free seconds, it'd be great if you could sign this petition, hopefully the new government might get the hint and re-consider, even if you don't live in Australia.

If anything it would mean hundreds of good jobs seems like a no brainer.

Forget copper or fiber optics .....if anyone hasn't noticed wireless is way to go its SO much cheaper to put up more towers than muck around digging 10000km of channels to put in fiber optics fine in the late 70s its all WIFI 21st century any cable is just going backwards WIfi with more towers only way to go i got rid of my home phone 4 years ago no regrets my phone works great as a WIFI hotspot for my notebook, iPod very nicely ,

cant tell if trolling but your theory is fundamentally flawed on the basics of transmission distance, throughput, bandwidth and latency.

And from a radiation point of view, id much rather have light traveling down a glass fiber than having 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz radio waves polluting the air.

Actually, doing "last mile" connections via P2P wireless is a really good idea. You can get 1gbp+ connections over many many kilometers, and ends up costing a lot less than burying or running cable over that distance. Could service many remote locations at a fraction of the cost.

Actually the proposed "copper" network will not be any different in the long run. I cannot agree that FIBER will be better in all circumstances. With the fiber network, you share ALL of the bandwidth with your neighbors and anybody along the way to the node/server. The copper network on the other hand doesn't suffer from such things. From what i've seen in the speedtest results fiber in only very marginally faster in reality with slower ping only marginally.

Not to mention not many servers will even allow you to download to your network's potential. + it is very expensive and timetaking.

how dafuq does fiber have a slower ping?

i dont see anyway copper is better than fiber optic at all for the end user.

In reply to fiddy:
From the exchange normal electrical signals need to be processed into light and then decoded at the end-user's home, and the same from your home to the servers. Thats what i'd put the results that i've seen down to in accordance to ping.

No trolling what's so ever after 30 years as an electronics techinican specifically in RF, and Computing, i know the odd thing or two about it, everything gets down to money and time on huge projects. The previous thank god government, said yeah let's put in cable/ fibre optics all over the place and it will only take till 2021( i think may be wrong but its a long way off) to get it done as of a few months ago,an expected 60000 homes where supposed to be connected to the NBBS but only 6000 houses had been done so ten times slower than expected. And with now telstra having issues with the junction centers with asbestos and other nasties in the said junctions how much more is that going to slow it down. Mention the word asbestos and everyone runs for cover so that mess thousands of junctions where the cabling comes together has to be fixed first. Hence if its going to get done within my lifetime, wireless is the only way to go. And that's Not even taking into consideration the extra millions and millions of dollars. Another 1000 towers in the right places covering 99% of the population has got to be a better logistics solution than digging up 10s of thousands of Km of ground to put in cable/ fiber .Theres Not going to be a perfect solution as far as polluting the airwaves with extra RF, that shouldnt be an issue we don't need that many more towers in cities the majority are needed in the outback so the density in cities of RF would barely change.we already have 4G capability in the big cities how fast do we really need it to be.Finally what about the thousands of tonnes if pollution from all the equipment used to dig these channels to put the cable in. And after that's done it has to be connected to each house so so much time ,wireless plug it in switch it on and use it. Satellites can get the data to outback Australia with minimal effort even if we have to buy a few still faster and cheaper than cable

So would i but after reading my novel above you can see why there are faster cheaper more environmentally better ways on getting what needs to be done, and if you haven't gathered by the amount of content I'm very passionate about this is the way to go

Wireless just doesn't have a leg to stand on compared to fiber, don't forget the aging copper cables that will need replacing in the future.

Did you know NBNco have installed a power supply in every home they have ran fiber to so you can still use the internet and/or VOIP for emergency calls even in the event of a power outage?
