"the aging copper cables" That doesn't quite make sense to me. In my street, the cables are over 70 years old and provide me with 10+Mbps and never drop out. But even with such speed CAPABILITIES, you will not download from a normal server at that speed. Servers throttle data transfer to a max so they don't ddos themselves by letting their servers run over 100% of what theyre capable of. If you have say 1000 people downloading at 100+ Mbps a even medium sized server cant handle that (100,000 Mbps)
 





It's unlikely a server will have 1000 people downloading from it at 100mbps, unless it's one of the huge filesharing sites and maybe Google/YouTube.

I don't really care about the speeds though, just the fact the NBN is a whole lot cheaper for better internet, and it's adding a backbone to the country that it seriously needs, as well as competition to companies like Telstra. I definitely wasn't impressed when we lost internet and all phone services (including 000) for over 24 hours last year as a result of the main AND backup fibers being washed away in flooding. There needs to be more redundancy, and the NBN would have provided that.

Signed... doubt it will help much but it can't hurt.

I do not understand why any government would not prioritize internet infrastructure in some way... aren't the last 20 years a sufficient example of the fact that information exchange is beneficial? The internet is quite possibly the single biggest step forward in communication since the invention of the printing press.
 
Yep, but unfortunately most of the people in power are old farts, and probably don't really understand or care about the internet :p

At least Kevin Rudd had a clue.
 
Hey I'm an old fart youve obviously read my long post above ...i live for the internet...lol really i liked Kevin Rudd i still do ,i voted for him but didn't agree with NBN ..or the way he wanted to do it ,long involved etc i not writing again what i wrote that's enough you've got my thoughts ...damn at 50 i must be one of the oldies in the forum, but i still have my passions and its something we all need to keep feeling young and with it.

Lucky bastard lol. Im on telstra ultimate cable though so i get VERY decent speeds without the NBN :)
 
Yeah I'm not holding my breath on which decade its going to be in my suburb .In the Mean time 4G wireless is working wonderfully ..lol
 
Good luck Things. In my state, there was an initiative to lay fiber optics to the various cities in the valley, but the phone and cable companies lobbied hard to prevent that from occurring in the capital city (where I am), saying they could make up the difference. I bet your politician is just as paid off as the ones here that were involved with that.
