Do you feel that the laser is just a desire that goes after holding it.

Hi

So yeah I got my first high power laser, aaaaaaaaand its not working very good.
Well I guess some dirt melted on the window, anyway, after 1 meter it doesn't burn anything.
So I basically didn't enjoy it.

I am now doing my next build, which is going to be with a 9mm diode.

I want to take your opinion in this.
Do or have ever felt that once you hold your laser and burn few thing, all the fun goes after the curiosity is gone ?

I am asking this because a friend said to me:Its gonna be a desire and once you hold it, its gone and you don't want it anymore.

I hope I made my self clear.

:thanks: for reading.

Edit: Beams are nice, but whats the point if you cant see them because of the goggles.

The novelty of burning things wore off on me after the second match. The main reason I like lasers is because of the bright beam, that never wore off on me and I still love lasers.

If all you want a laser for is burning stuff then yes, it gets boring after you have one. If you apprciate the beauty of a laser beam then you will never get bored of it.

Well I mean the question is why do you like them? If it is merely a question of something that looks cool and can "burn stuff" then yeah, I think you're going to potentially hit a wall pretty early. If you are building things, you get more bang for your buck as its more about you and your skills, and being proud of what you can make. Picking up something that you have made and seeing it work beautifully, even if that use is kind of superfluous, is a great feeling.

While I do find myself doing less indiscriminate lasing at home, I'm not at all worried of being totally bored as I'm using my lasing power to try and work them into some art projects.

If its merely the manifestation of a desire, all desire is illusory my friend!

Well then save your money on the 9mm. Lasers might not be your thing:undecided:

Your the one who built the "Worlds most powerful laser" not at all to burn everything you come across:whistle::na:

Just some philosophical ramblings. First part may have some relevance; last bit gets a little corny though.

how about the satisfaction of putting the components together yourself, scavenging parts from old pieces of equipment, the engineering of drivers, making parts work with each other, machining heatsinks and focus adapters, the beauty of the beam and last 'burning'.

That's what interests me.

I don't always use goggles when working with my lasers. You just have to be careful, mark out the path of the beam and provide a place for the beam to terminate, also make sure the laser wont move. If you're outside, then it's safe to point it around far away, or in the night sky if there are no planes.
Other than that, you should wear the goggles.

I agree if testing in small areas such as inside a house it is best to wear safety goggles but if outside you pretty much dont half to use the goggles.

DIY device that produces a spectacular coherent beam of light that you can wield with your hand.

Nuff said.

This is exactly how I feel. I enjoy the beam and am loving it. I rarely burn anything. I never really found that to be fun. But looking at the beams I never get tired of, and the actual laser hosts I love as well.

I like the beams generated.

Burning stuff wears off. It's a novelty of burning things that ends quickly.

Now if I can only find a shark to attach mine to....bwahahahahaha
