smart man (1 dollar handling fee, you deserve that)

you could always just wait 3 weeks to buy yours..

Airy, you are planning on overstocking correct? (if thats within your means)

Who has done a group buy before, I have a few questions:

1: Is their import/export/custom fees from here to anywhere, or anywhere to here, for just a sled.
2: I remember Igor saying I would have to pull off the metal heatsink with diode in it to send it to him without fees, which is fine and I can competently do in less than 10 seconds.
:D

1: I have never been slapped with an import fee, but that may just be a matter of luck. Although, I did have to prove my identity and provide a viable reason for the import 3 times so far. That involves tons of paperwork going back and forth and making sure that the information on the shipment is verified 100% before they release the shipment.
2: If you are going to be shipping to countries where the import customs are very strict... Try including a legitimate invoice with clear declaration on the inside and outside of the box, as well as declaring the contents verbatim. Also, for laser diode, I would use stickers to identify that the parts are static sensitive and double bag everything in a static-free bag.

Good luck;

Re: GB PHR-803T HD-DVD SLEDS [#2]

If you ship to countries outside the US - use Fist Class shipping, and there is NO CUSTOMS PAPERWORK required for shipments under 16 ounces now.

If you are running this GB - you should charge a flat price per sled - work your shipping into the equation, and make a few bucks that way. Anyone who disagrees with that statement can buy elsewhere ! Running a GB is tedious work, lotsa hours, lotsa complaints and argumentative customers that are so tight, their ass squeaks when they walk. Most likely they invented copper wire by trying to take a penny away from a child at some point....stretching it so thin...well, you get the picture there.

You can run this GB however you want - state the parameters, and stick to them. In the end - you will be making about $00.45 per hour doing all of this work, and you will STILL have people pissing and moaning.

That is my $00.02 (U.S.) regarding this GB - and I have no reservations taking part in it, and sending you money in advance for these sleds - you have my vote of confidence without the use of middleman, as I know you are competent, and organized. Thanks for putting up this effort - in the end, YOU ARE THE BOSS - run this how you want to, if people do not want to partake, they can go elsewhere to buy these, right ?

Put me down for 5, dependent on how the final outcome of the rules of engagement are !

I cannot express my agreement with SenKat strongly enough ;) You are doing fine, do not worry about accidently ending up with extra money at the end, you just will not.

Re: GB PHR-803T HD-DVD SLEDS [#2]

thats exactly why i sugested a handling fee.. if you are completely transparent with peoples money, they tend to respect you more.. Making a few extra bucks is OK. The only reason i suggest a handling fee is so the charge is transparent... you could add that dollar handling fee per sled for all i care.. then at least you getting 50bucks for your time and gas...

Re: GB PHR-803T HD-DVD SLEDS [#2]

Thanks Greg that all means a lot to me. Once I get this shipping quote from the supplier and I stop by the post office to get some more quotes, I should be set as to a solid price. They haven't responded on shipping costs which is weird because they are usually quick. Thanks Greg for the solid idea and support it really helps.

That is something that only matters for me.. Not you or anyone else..

If i order something from another country, and the envelope is big, the customs look in. If it looks expensive, they want an invoice.. And if the invoice doesn't convince them, they want proof of price in the form of a credit card statement..

Sleds look expensive, and i end up paying 25% on top of pretty much anything i order.

If the diodes are removed from sleds - just the heatsink ripped off, cable cut, tape over window and put in a baggie, they can be declared as something cheap on the invoice, and they are then usually just passed through. It's also smart to put a blob of solder on the legs (above the PCB), to make them perfectly safe from ESD...

It's not something i want someone else to do, but i don't really have a choice.. Otherwise i always end up paying much more than everyone else.. The PSX-BOY diodes cost me $57 each, just because of this.. :(

There are some other countries, where the customs are just as anal as ours. Brazil is one example... People should always check about regulations with their customs. Including "invoices" is very important in such cases.. I usually make an "invoice" myself, and send it to the person sending me something..

Re: GB PHR-803T HD-DVD SLEDS [#2]

Igort - sounds like you have had bad luck with customs :( I have shipped litterally dozens of packages to Brazil, and never had any reports of customs issues ! At any rate, the USPS regulations state that for USPS first Class International mail, anything under 16 ounces does not require customs paperwork. Go out to usps.com and check it out - it pays to know the postal regs - as the folks behind the counters will rip you off EVERY single time !
