PTI has been supplying these to Laser Gun Sight manufactures for almost a year now, but I haven't seen any hobbyist using them up until now.

UV, Visible, & IR Laser Diodes Available

You can also purchase a completed diode module from them 515nm 20mW IQ Green Laser Diode Module part # "IQ1C20(510-50)" This is 20mW at 510nm +/- 5nm, but you might not like the price; it's only $2950.00

515nm 20mW IQ Green Laser Diode Module from Power Technology, Inc.

We're going to talk about as much as we think is appropriate to talk about. If there's something we don't address, it's probably for a reason, and it's probably for a reason that isn't selfish or silly. One thing I'm not going to talk about, is where these diodes came from. It's not necessarily a secret, but it's also not my place to say. I'm more than happy to acknowledge the source of these diodes if that source so desires, but otherwise, I'm staying mum on the subject. That said, I think a lot of people on the forum already seem to know where these diodes originated from. Our reason for not bringing it up here directly, is out of courtesy - to avoid an inbox flood that may be unwanted.

So here's a question.. why say anything at all? If we're so concerned with keeping the source a secret, why post? I'd say it would be best to leave the request unanswered, the only reason I can think of to do otherwise is to show off by saying "I know but you don't".. If I want to keep something secret I don't go around telling everyone I have a secret that I can't tell them. Why? Because it's immature and silly.

Actually, that paragraph you quote of Joe's, was actually a paragraph from my initial post creating the thread. You wouldn't realize it, because for some reason Joe removed the quote tags, so it looks like those were his own words.

So Joe wasn't saying those things to Philip. Rather, he was quoting the portion of the OP (that Philip should have read) that addressed Philip's inquiry.

I see there's no additional news of substance regarding these lovely laser diodes.

I must a bit more critical. The diodes shown here are boutique items. The manufacturer and cost are not mentioned - not a good thing. It's safe to assume they are very expensive.

The biggest problem with these laser diodes is their horrible efficiency. 1.5 Watts of power is required for ~40-50mW of output!! They are too inefficient to be useful for a 'pico projector' -- unless it running off AC power and not batteries, and that little projector will be running hot!

DPSS, despite being more complicated, has been perfected. DPSS is more efficient, and much less expensive. A good DPSS laser will be >10% efficient.. these laser diodes are 3-4% efficient.

However I still pine for that lovely aqua color, and the novelty of owning such a rare laser diode.

I've actually contacted someone who had some of these and they aren't horribly expensive believe it or not. They are cheaper than a WL Arctic for a 510nm diode. They won't sell to anyone though.

Has anyone tried this?

Green laser diodes modules are now available from Power Technology. Green laser diodes have several advantages over Diode Pumped Solid State green lasers including 1) lower current requirement [think longer battery life] 2) less waste heat 3)superior stability over wide temperature ranges. Call Power Technology today with your specifications - 501.407.0712. Say you saw it on Facebook!

Power Technology, Inc | Facebook

Edit: Scanning back I see PTI mentioned - just saw that on their facebook page and it seemed very definite! Sorry.

PTI has traditionally been $1k+

Maybe their FB post is an indication that things have changed. I wouldn't count on in though.

Traditionally, getting diodes from someone like PTI or Thorlabs implies that they've done some pretesting on their end - often binning the diodes by wavelength. This adds considerably to the price of the diode itself over what we're used to paying.

Consider that our Mits 300 diodes are being sold by Thorlabs for somewhere around $300 (haven't checked recently). It's generally quite high.

I'd love to be able to purchase from PTI because they seem like good guys. But I know that we're not their target demographic, and our wallets (or maybe our stomachs) are a lot thinner than that of their typical customer base.
