WTB: Phone jammer

I don't like how idiots misuse their cell phones as well (especially in theaters which I think should be Faraday caged), but you should treat cell phone interference in the same way as misusing a laser with aircraft: don't do it.

Cell phone jamming is a very serious crime in almost all jurisdictions. Purposeful or inadvertent interference with communications is a federal offense in the US, and I assume other countries have similar levels of penalty. Given the immense commercial value of the spectrums in question, fines are extremely hefty, often levied by the second. Triangulation techniques can also be used to find your location, so just like those idiots flash-blinding chopper pilots: don't think you're invisible.

Furthermore, owning or selling a jammer, in addition to being illegal, can single you out for blame even if it was not your actions that caused such interference. Importing such a device may draw unwanted attention to you.

on top of the fact that our good friends the government might also think of having one as some sort of terrorist plot. and you know what they do with those people!

Yeah, I'd definitely be concerned that you might be investigated as a terrorist or something, especially when talking about EMPs or other destructive devices. You might as well be talking about dirty bombs or something of that nature. You may not mean any real harm, but with the security paranoia these days you never know what trouble it may cause you.

Yeah true, Especially with all this WWIII crap around.

I think you mean power not energy and lead ;) or car batteries have a bad power density compared to electrolitic capacitors.
I actually builded an EMP that was able to knock out a old calculator from one meter with a capacitor from my coilgun and a big copper loop

Well, my assumption was that you'd carry a battery that you use to charge the capacitors which will then fire the EMP. The energy required (according to my calc using very rudimentary assumptions) to be stored in the capacitor bank would be around one car battery worth. No doubt lead-acid batteries have low energy-density ratios, but they are easiest to use when it comes to storing large amounts of charge/energy. They also are able to provide quite alot of amps.

I guess I'm probably wrong regarding the amount of energy required, since you seem to have used less to knock out a calculator from one meter away. So looks like my assumptions were wrong.

Its not all in the total energy of the pulse, but also in how you deliver the pulse. Bandwidth, wave front intensity, pulse width, etc also play an important role.

I would imagine that cell phone jamming is far worse in the eyes of the FCC compared to a general EMP.

cant an EMP be made from a disposable camera. i thought i remember reading about something like that in school that people where modifying them and toasting RFID tags from best buy or something.

That sounds interesting! I should go make a mini handheld device that does "localised, controlled, EMP burst". Sounds like a really cool project! Now if only more info was available about EMP...

Do you reckon anyone on here would do some freelance electronics work and make me one based on a schematic online and send it to me?

I can't do that since I don't have the expertise, but I believe signal jamming just requires lots of white noise (at the basic level) at the correct frequencies that you need to jam. So maybe you need to look for a white noise generator, and then modify it to broadcast on the frequencies of GSM and UMTS transmission.

Found some interesting experimental layouts:
1. How to Build an Experimental EM White Noise Generator
2. Relics: FM transmission: Wideband FM broadcast band jammer

Give those a go!

Somehow this seems appropriate here...

just a heads up mobile phone jammers are illegal in Australia
