IMO, it is better to sacrifice some power (for example, 200-600 mW) and have a long-lasting diode than pushing it too hard and decreasing its chances of survival...
A few more mW won't make the beam a lot brighter or better-burning...

One thing about Rick is that he is a commercial seller and not just a " hobbyist " so he has LOTS of capital to work with. The driver he uses, he recently bought 300 and normally buys everything in bulk. If anybody has $539 to spend on 1 diode, and buys 4 at once has got to have some working capital.
Those new 3.5w 9mm diodes will take quite a bit more than 2.4a and using a driver like that is under utilizing the potential of the diode, by a lot....

You can get the NEW 9mm NDB7A75 3.5W laser diodes from DTR's shop here but as far as I can see there isn't much info out there about 'em...! :beer:

I just got them so I will try to get some proper testing done here soon. The current generation of X-drives can do 3A which is the recommended current of the datasheet and will give you by the quick test I ran 3W with a three element lens and 4W with a G-2. With that you know you will get long life out of the diode. Lazeerer will have a 5Aish X-drive available before too long as well for pushing these past the datasheet specs.

Does anyone else have any suggestions on lasers that have great beam shots? Bright, visible beams are all I really care about. Burning / popping balloons I don't really care about, but I think they do go hand in hand.

My Maglite comes with batteries so you can enjoy it the day it arrives. Does 3.2W and has one of the nicest beams I've seen across the Tampa sky. Be also visible indoors but don't do it with a focused beam since it will burn your walls
