Windows 10 slow?

How old is the laptop? Even though mine was a high end gaming one when I bought it back in late 2011, it still runs like crap with 10. Something didn't work at all. I went back to 7 after a couple days. I noticed a lot of the same in the computer shop I work in. Using a disc to install seems to help as long as the system is compatible. It seems like M$ and OEMs are trying to say a lot of systems are compatible when they really aren't. OEMs tend to stop support after a couple years so many of them don't even have Win 10 drivers. Honestly, I'll be glad when the free upgrade period ends. There has been quite a few pissed off customers coming in wanting 10 gone.
 





The older laptop i have it running on is basically my media box, hooked up to my tv. It's an about 6 year old HP 5320m, core i5-450M with 4 gigs of ram. It was a fairly expensive laptop at the time, but that's mostly because it's very thin and light for the era, not for exceptional performance.
 
I've been trying to be as optimistic as I can with win10, but my patience has worn from thin to absent. I can't go for more than about half an hour without all USB ports cutting out, which includes all I/O devices and my wi-fi adapter. I'll be downgrading (seems like an upgrade) to win7 in the near future. Windows 10 has a great design and some nice features, but the crashes, freezing, USB cut and most recently bad file recognition just isn't worth it. Maybe I shouldn't be blaming this on the operating system I could have a virus who knows, but with win10's antivirus (which is actually one of the most outstanding parts of 10) it shows nothing, or it's evading it. Regardless a complete re-installation of the OS to win7 should do the trick, I'm more familiar with 7 so it should be pleasant to use. Also, Microsoft doesn't track you in win7 :p

Yeah, I'd definitely switch back if it was that bad. I'm sure your mobo or CPU are somewhat incompatible with W10 if you're having all those issues though.

It runs very, very well on newer hardware. Not necessarily powerful hardware, just newer.

edit: The tracking and ads suck, but I've bitten the bullet for the nice features.

If you tried a clean install and are still having issues, then it is probably a driver compatibility problem, and it's not likely to go away. Do try a clean install of W10 if you haven't already though.

The built in AV in windows 10 really is very good, and superior to other free alternatives imo. I was an avast user for many user, but have found the program to keep getting more and more bloated, with more ads, pop ups, and false positives. Last straw was when W10 detected a virus that was completely unnoticed by avast.
 
I've got a partition and dual boot with Ubuntu, and absolutely no problems there. But I use Windows just as much as Ubuntu, Windows has a great & easy to navigate UI and insanely wide compatibility over all OS's.

@Infinitus, I completely agree with you on win10's anti-virus, it's quite the defender. Definitely one of the worst drawbacks from switching from win10 to 7. Not sure if I'm gunna do a re-install of win10, I'm actually stuck between giving win10 another shot or going to 7. Hmm, gunna have to think about this one for a bit.

The issue is with W10. Some processors and motherboards don't like some of the base features it uses.

Also, you can still install defender on 7, and it uses the same definitions.

Interesting. I'll have to read up to see if anyone with similar specs as mine has any problems with win10.

I can't remember for the life of me, is the same anti-virus used in 10 in 7? If not, got a link to the one in 10? It's definitions are like no other and it'd be great to have if I end up switching to 7.

The one in 10 is a little bit more advanced and built in, but their definitions are the same.

I'm not sure they would be exactly the same, since both versions would have different vulnerabilities. I guess they would be very similar though.

And it just has it's odd things too: when i switch my laptop to airplane mode and then back to normal mode, the airplane icon remains in the taskbar, clicking on it doesn't do anything. Normally no problem as it actually does connect back to the network i was previously on, but annoying when changing locations since i have to reboot to select a different network (like the open wifi at an airport).
 
WiFi, Bluetooth, cell signals... They never have, and never will bring a plane down, but can sometimes cause interference, annoyance, to pilots. So unless you're doing it to conserve power, airplane mode is mostly pointless.

Ironically, literally all of my PCs now boot waaay faster than my phones and tablets.

Edit:

The tracking that W10 has caught so much negativity over (rightfully so) have been deployed in updates for 7, and 8.1 for a long time now.

It's a shame you're getting those issues...as has already been pointed out...it's must be a driver / incompatibility issue, as the hardware works in Ubuntu.
After the abomination that was Win8 /8.1 ...I really think MS pulled the rabbit out of the hat with Win 10...and as IE rightly pointed out, after you've turned off all the background stuff, it really is a sleek OS, especially with an SSD.

If I were you, I'd be locking horns with the problem's you're experiencing untill I fixed them :eg:

I had some really annoying issues with windows 10 drivers, for example my keyboard, razer black widow ultimate, 2010(?) version stopped working. Network adapter was screwy, sound was also screwed up. Tried everything I could think of.

Only fix was to do a clean install. With that done I've had almost zero issues.

Windows 10 updates are quirky though, they will just run in the background, which is mostly fine, but there are times I find myself wondering :wtf: why is it so slow, and on checking see that the system is updating.

So again... do a clean install.
 
Thanks IE, that helped me figure out my final choice, I'll probably give 10 another shot this weekend.
 
Have you guys tried messing with your Power Settings? I've read stuff like the PCI Express link state power savings may cause freezes and stuff. Windows 10 has more advanced power saving features, but they might not do quite as well in an in-place upgraded system.

You can also try the old standbys like setting your pagefile to a static size (or turning it off altogether if you have enough RAM). This seems to have helped quite a few people on Reddit. Put it on a separate physical drive from your main drive if you have other drives.

There was also this post by a Microsoft employee, about some slowdown they're trying to track down in a recent update.

All these problems are why I won't upgrade my main desktop and have gone to great lengths to prevent Microsoft from auto-updating it without my permission. It works great, and I don't want to be a beta tester.

I actually use it to conserve power in situations where no wireless is available, like when watching a movie on an airplane without wifi on a long-haul flight.

The whole interference thing is BS really.

Aircraft communicate with towers and between them at about 120 MHz narrowband AM. Phone networks, depending on generation an area, operate at least at 700 MHz (usually 1800/1900) so there isn't much of a chance of interference.

There are just people being overly cautious preventing situations that simply do not happen. No airplane ever crashed due to people using cellphones aboard, no gas station ever caught fire because of people using cellphones while pumping gas.

But for that matter: afaik no gas station as ever caught fire due to people smoking while pumping gas either. If the concentration of petrol in the air is within the explosive limits, you will pass out (and probably die) breathing that air long before you can fill up a tank of gas.
