Windows 10 , Have you?

Well chaps, let me just grab my salt & pepper to season my words that I'm about to eat.
I had to download a huge file last night so I left my comp on overnight, and Windows 10 kindly installed the "Threshold 2" update released mid November, and it's effectively trashed my machine. Keeps crashing and freezing, and the update kindly deleted a few of my apps without notice.

Now I'm about to see if I can get rid of the updates, sadly Sys Restore was turned off.

That stinks I haven't had issues with the new update on either of the machines I installed it on. That's unfortunate. If you have another machine you could try and make a bootable disk or USB with the windows 10 media creation tool from windows
 





I would have never thought for the longest time I would ever upgrade to Windows 10. Funny enough, I decided to skip out on buying a 447nm lab laser and purchase a new HP Envy laptop, which came with Windows 10!

I've been using it for about 2 hours now and it's definitely different. It takes some getting used to, but im sure once I use it long enough it'll become second-nature :)

Good one there for those that don't know. The default settings are basically 'report everything i do and everywhere i go to microsoft', and you'll want to turn those all off (apart from the anti-virus/malware update stuff perhaps).

As far as the start button (pullup?) thing goes: i never use it on the media pc, but i'm sure there is some way to remove those annoying 'tiles' quite easily. Will definitely do that on may work machine when i update.

What i really liked about the win 10 update is that everthing i care about was conserved: installed programs just worked, even their history and preferences were preserved (at least for the torrent client and chrome). One thing it did loose was filetype association of video files with vlc, changing the default to some MS media player. That is a 2 click fix though so no biggie.

As far as really old hardware goes: this free update is only for win 7 and 8 right? So coming from vista it should not be a free update that is pushed to your system? This doesn't mean that vista/xp era hardware cannot cope, but probably means it might not work very well.

Well, uninstalled the update but it's still the same. Format & back to Windows 7 for me :/ .
 
I went back to 7 a while ago as I wasnt happy with the win 10 "spyware". Microsoft still transmits data back even if you have specificaly told it not to. Those using win 7 and 8 should however be aware that MS decided to bundle the same spying tools in several optional (and not so optional) updates for these systems too, not long after the win 10 release. I just spent a few hours last night reading up and uninstalling them all. There are 4 main ones and about 10 -15 associated updates.:beer:
 
Windows 10 wont play AVI files right, I have to convert or download a fix...you would think things would be reverse compatible.

Anyone know the codex or the easy way to make windows 10 with its media player 12 play my AVI files ? Or do I have to get out my wallet to make my GD computer work with their free upgrade that I was prompted every 20 min to upload.

I should just put everything I want to keep private on my old laptop that never goes online, anything you put on your pc that goes online is no longer private anyway.

@RedCowboy Do you specifically need Windows Media Rip-off? There are a number of very good alternatives including Kodi which is the new name for XBMC. It comes in several flavors, for those stuck in Windows purgatory and most Linux distros. One can use KodiBuntu which has the Linux core in it or an new kid on the block (relatively,) OpenELEC which is even more spare than KodiBuntu.

My wife travels the WWW to distant, far away lands...read malware. I put Kodi on a separate 64 gig SSD in a duel boot system with windows. Will also use it for an HTPC.

Kodi can be installed or RUN from a USB stick in persistent mode. This configuration is most easily done by putting KodiBuntu instillation on a USB using the appropriate tool. Then have a blank USB formatted in FAT 32 (8 gig USB 3.0 is cheap from Microcenter's home brand..around $5.00.)

Disconnect all the drives temporarily, boot into bios, click on the USB with the program, it will install the only place it can...the other USB stick.

@RedCowboy....I just read about your Windows 10 misadventure. I turned off recovery too because I use a lot of teaks for having Win OS 7 on an SSD. What I do is use Win AIK for wondows deployment and image pre and post sysprep, anbd inmage again after all software is installed.

After six months of experimentation I decided on two imaging programs that I like...One is Macrium Reflect Professional and the Other is Acronis 2015...with the later I create a Universal Restore to bare bones containing the Win PE environment. Lets me work in DOS, change drive letters etc. With Aconis it is installed with a hot key allowing the PC to boot up into the Acronis Recovery mode. For both programs, I do not use any compression and I verify each backup...mount them and look for files. For data I use a bit for bit file sync program.

If I had any sense, I woul finally break down and get a Mac!

OH...quick and dirty VLC Media Player For Windows & Linux Very easy to use...NOTE: Be very careful when you install. Some of the packages have bloatware...you must decline those software entities and you can have a clean VLC

I highly recommend Revo Uninstaller Professional. It monitors ALL my installs with logs and therefore removes EVERYTHING including all registry entries related to the software. With it, if you unintentionally install bloatware...you can easily get rid of it.
