That module should be 12mm. No need to gut it when it dies. Just replace the whole thing with a aixiz module. They should be the same diameter, but i'm not sure if that IR driver will have enough voltage compliance for a BR diode though. Plus not a lot of thermal mass available for heat sinking. Probably shouldn't go higher than a PHR.

The host is pretty hefty, and I think someone put a 6x in one and it did fine, don't quote me on that though :whistle:
 





Aixiz modules fit in the core host very well. I was going to try building something into my old core host, but lost all the tailcap/switch button etc.

Honestly I'd be willing to attempt a 445 in this host. I'd probably keep a <30 second duty cycle in it. But I'd really be willing especially if an axis module fits.
 
If you plan on building a laser into the core, I would suggest you use a "Sure" module rather than the Aixiz (they can be purchased at Hightechdealz.com).

The Sure modules are slightly larger in diameter and fit much more "snug" than an Aixiz which tends to slip right through.

Also, you will want to consider duty cycles before you decide what wavelength you want to stuff in there.

I would recommend keeping the total wattage at the diode under 1.3W.

Wattage can be calculated by I(A) x Vf (forward voltage) = W
Example: 445nm diode run at 500mA-- 0.5A x 3.9V = 1.95W
The total wattage of waste heat can be calculated by simply subtracting the optical output power from the total wattage of power in.

That means:
405nm can be powered up to 230mA.
445nm can be powered up to 325mA.
655nm can be powered up to 460mA.
(approximately)

In my experience, with a sure module and a tight press fit, <1.3W power at the diode should allow for a ~90 second on, 30 second off duty cycle.
