I think the batteries should be fine... At the Evo's price point I would expect it to have a good driver and be able to handle the voltage difference.
Even 1.5V Alkalines will sag down to 1.2-1.3V under heavy load, and since NiMH batteries don't drop so much, they should work great. Sanyo makes some of the best quality batteries (I have ever used). My Sanyo 18650s are GREAT especially in comparison to my cheapo off-brands.
I got these batteries pretty cheap with a 5% discount too.

Let me know how well those batteries work for you. I've got some AA NiMH, but they are too wide to fit in the laser. Also how do you feel about the lower voltage? 2.4V vs. 3V
