Why??!?!!!!

When I tried it with the 445 it was 'clear air'. No particulate. I didn't notice any break in the rayleigh scattering.

Yes .. the flame is generally pure gases (no dust) from the combustion .. CO2 and H2O mostly. Some dust will be sucked from bellow .. some of it may even burn .. but it's clear, that the concentration of the dust above the flame will be lower.

Btw. what you see indeed ARE photons .. just photons reflected/diffracted on the dust. Generally you can only see photons .. can't you ?

We can only see "things" because our eyes respond to the photons that are reflected or emitted from the "thing."

:can:
So, in order for us to see something, it must reflect or emit light. Therefore, we cannot "see" a photon, since a photon does not reflect or emit light. It is light.
Light is what gives us sight, not the object of sight itself. At least that's how I "see" it. :p

@Lotus: Thanks! :D

Messed it up because the power supply fan was blowing air on the match the first time. Blocked it with a white box and you can see it!

From 1:06 on is the main "ooooh..." part

How is this different from the pictures RA posted? Try your little experiment again in the dark and you'll see that the rayleigh scattering is still there in the 'gap'. It's just the particulate that's being pushed away by the flame front. There's the same number of photons passing through the space as there is without the match. There's just no particulate there for them to reflect off of due to the flame front. Not sure how many people have to say it before you realize there's no 'voodoo' or 'magic' or any laws of physics defied. heh.

I uploaded the video before I saw that pictures had been posted. I figured I might as well post it anyways. I'm not saying there's any voodoo or magic I'm just saying it's an interesting effect when you think about it.

I'm not positive but a hair dryer or better yet, a heat gun, will probably have the same effect.

Note to self: Very soon, lasers will be metered in "Chip Weevils" (versus milliwatts or watts). This system is similar to the way that samurai swords were rated at one time, during the feudal period... in "peasants" or "bodies"; the number of peasants that could be divided in two with one strike.

I started watching this thread from work about 12 hours ago. It's getting really good now.
I have a question concerning "the beam is created when laser light stimulates gaseous emissions from the rear end of chip weevils."
Are there other related weevils that somehow are responsible for sound too ?
I would like to know because as cool as the first weevils are and their emmision's related stimuli for the eyes, I find that more often than not that I am in need of the services of the second group more.
This would mean...

I'm sorry but you set it up for me....:na:

I will choose the lesser of two weevils.:eg:

Bwaaaahaaa haaaaahaaaaaa.

It's not science. It's SCIENCE!

Know the difference. :p

Correct.

science. = research, taking notes, rigorously following scientific method, peer review, papers, publication, re-experimenting, titrating, sorting, carefully measuring and reporting on observations.

SCIENCE! = FIRE. LASERS. HIGH VOLTAGE. MAGNETS THE SIZE OF TRUCKS.

Exhibit 1A: "science."

Exhibit 1B: "SCIENCE!"
