Why there are no high power handheld red lasers?

Anybody can tell why is it that I can't find a high power (>300mw) red handheld laser?

All I find is around 200mw - 250mw, but I don't see anything greater than that such as 350, 400 or 500mw, while in other colors there are actually high power handheld lasers.

It has to do with the diodes that are available. Pointers aren't a market for diodes themselves, so the diodes get taking from other products like DVD burners, BluRay burners, projectors, etc. 300mW is about the strongest a RED diode needs to be capable of producing in order burn DVDs at that fastest speed DVD disks can safely be spun. So there isn't a big market for stronger RED diodes.

Having said that, strong red diodes exist, but instead of bajillions being made each year for common optical drives, you're talking about fractions of that many being made at higher powers. So you *could* find a stronger red diode if you wanted, it would just be very expensive. However, you probably could push one of the diodes you've seen running at 250mW up to 350mW. It might have a shorter life, and get hot so quickly that it's duty cycle would be low - but it's doable.

I have a 635nm diode capable of as much as ~380mW, but in addition to costing ~$200, it is also incredibly complicated to actually focus into a beam (beyond my abilities) :(

Very good explanation! it has helped me learn something new : )

Maybe I can help you, because I've got more hand-held laser. It has red, green, blue, my store had some, there are some more. I can send to your mailbox.

spam much? I doubt you can help, unless you have some cni 500mW red's laying around.
He's not talking about wholesale red pens at 50-100mW

Wow is that new? The mod deleted it and it change the post count # of the posts after it to match so it is as if it never existed? ???

hopefully they are getting rid of spam better. making it like those @$$holes never existed.

I like seeing there post and it says "Banned" :D better than people sounding like there talking to the air...

I want a thread that keeps track of all the banned members, and maybe their banning offense. Hey Avery how about it?

Haha I'm so glad to see kipkay as the one with the worst rep
