What's happened to LPF?

An idea I always had was to replace the captcha on the registration screen with a very simple laser quiz. Passing the quiz would be mandatory before you are allowed to post. I would include very simple questions so as not to stump people, but just to get them to sniff around a bit before rushing to ask questions. Questions like "Can a cheap dollar store laser pointer be modded into a burning laser?", and "At what power are goggles needed?", etc. This would weed out the real idiots who don't care at all about learning and let the rest educate themselves to the basics before posting. It would also stop spam as no one will bother learning about lasers to just post about cheap iPhones. :p

This is not a new idea. So why dont we do it? Or will Avery have a problem limiting ad views?

you've been here for 3 months and you always have something to say about how lpf is run.

So what's you point?:p

If something doesn't make sense, I will always ask... Blindly following the leadership is not something I'm willing to do. Even very smart people of good moral character do make wrong decisions.

Yeah I have to agree with that too. You act like you've been here for years, and you havnt.

If you mean I sometimes disagree with veterans - that I have done, to a neutral or positive result.

Aside from that, I help where I can, and lurk where I can't. Nor do I claim any of the veteran privileges at this time.

InfinitusEquitas, the guys above ment that you´re acting like you have been grown up with the forum, going through ups and downs.

You may read a lot about former mebers, topics etc., but it´s by far not the same with taking actively a part in these highs and lows when they happened.

I came here thinking I knew it all, I was shot down..rapidly.

But because i'm man enough to admit when i'm wrong, and take the advice of people who have far greater knowledge than myself, I now get along with most people.

I think, a few things about this forum are..we don't suffer idiots, we tell them like it is.
Also like with the whole Awesome Lasers thing, some people come here thinking we're stupid...but gladly they dont last long.

Just my $0.02c

I don't disagree at all. If it makes any difference to you, I consider myself a newb, and I have a ton left to read and learn.

I do have a voice though, and I don't see a reason not to use. I realize this is not a self moderating forum, but consider this example, is the vote of an 18 year old any different than the vote of 90 year old?

I don't want to take this thread completely off topic though, so please I'd love to pickup that discussion in the Other section.

....all this info could of been found if you had used the search button damn it!!!

The search button doesn't return the correct information half the time anyways. I normally don't flame new people, but I love flaming new random Chinese vendors.

As a member who rarely posts and READS 99.9% of the time on this forum, I would like to point out that viewing all the negative responses and flames is more annoying and a bigger waste of time than the original offending post.

Whats worse? One dumb question, or a dozen flaming responses?

One needs to keep in mind that members range in age from kids to adults well advanced in age. It is inevitable that there will social challenges between the different age groups. The noobs and kids are here to LEARN from the more mature and experienced. What does someone learn when they get dumped on, unless they truly deserve it? It takes just as much effort to answer a question as it does to flame someone. I would hope that the older members would be more willing to teach than to ridicule or deride, unless it IS truly deserved, and then, it should be kept to PM's. I have no interest in reading someone else's public flogging. To be honest, though, there MAY be rare times when it IS appropriate to make a public example of something blatantly stupid or dangerous.

Personally, I avoid asking questions publicly for these very reasons. I won't post at all unless I have something to ADD to a conversation. I read this forum daily for over a year before I even joined. Perhaps more folks should consider this before asking questions, as the answers ARE usually already there. But what if someone needs an answer quickly and doesn't have time for an exhaustive search? Is it fair to jump all over them? Yes, there are those who ARE lazy, but you figure that out after a while, when they show no learning or gaining independence taking place. But, its just plain mean to jump all over someone on their first few posts, and its best just to ignore the trolls.

At my rate, I will probably never get rep power or even reach my first 50 posts! The "rep points" system doesn't reward self restraint very well, but rather, it seems to reward large quantities of frivolous posts. I cringe at the thought of the number of hours of my life that I would have to spend in this forum (or any forum for that matter) to post enough times with worthwhile content to ever achieve "veteran" status.

To those who end up name calling and attacking a person over the slightest provocation: GROW UP!

This is only my opinion, for what it is worth..

while i do agree with laserdan a bit. he isn't taking the LPF dynamic in to account. we are a social forum and a hobby forum. and in any social comunity there are rules of engagement. New comers need to try to fit in. it is not existing members duty to adapt to them. There are stickies for a reason. I don't care who you are, if you cant take the time to read about the most basics of lasers before you post, then you deserve to get 12 flaming responses. Thant is how lpf started, and that is how lpf will always be.

michael.

ALL humans (including me) suffer from delusions of grandeur.

This issue is a tempest in a teapot

All sound and fury

Signifying nothing
(forgive me Shakespeare)

The forum is successful.

Peace,

I don't. I usually think I, and everything I do, sucks. heh. Just ask Aryntha. :p He's known me for a long time.

The forum is successful. You will be assimilated. Your biological and technological distinctiveness will be added to our own. Resistance is futile.

Peace,
dave

Fixed. :D
